Sophie suffers severe memory loss after a traumatic head injury that is widely believed to have followed a suicide attempt. As she reconstructs her life in San Francisco, she discovers that the identity, marriage and motives presented to her may all be incomplete. Season 1 answers who Sophie is, but leaves the precise ferry incident—and why she made her most damaging choices—open for the next chapter.
The central mystery: Sophie is investigating herself
Sophie begins the series unable to remember her past. James, her husband, and the people around them describe a privileged San Francisco life interrupted by the ferry incident and her apparent suicide attempt. Sophie has to rely on other people’s accounts, medical recovery and fragments of memory while asking a more unsettling question: was the woman they describe really the whole truth?
Her reconstruction reveals that the mystery is not simply whether her marriage can survive. It is about the life and identity behind her current persona. The name Tess becomes an important clue to an earlier version of Sophie, suggesting that she deliberately left part of her past behind. By the finale, Season 1 has established who Sophie really was; it has not fully explained why she made the choices that brought her to the ferry.
Why James and the marriage are not the complete answer
Sophie initially examines her relationship with James as the likely key to the crisis. Their marriage contains secrecy and competing versions of events, but it does not account for everything she uncovers.

The affair with Thomas Baden
Sophie had an affair with Thomas Baden. That relationship gives her investigation another motive, another set of loyalties and another source of danger beyond the marriage. Baden is later revealed to be an undercover officer, making his connection to Sophie part of a larger criminal and investigative story rather than only a private betrayal.
The life Sophie concealed
The clues connected to Tess show that Sophie was not merely an amnesiac version of the same woman. She had a previous identity and a past she chose to abandon. Season 1 therefore separates two questions: “Who is Sophie?” is answered more clearly than “Why did she leave that life?”

What happens to Baden and Harrison
The finale turns the personal mystery into a crime story. Baden is dead, and Sophie must confront her involvement in the crimes surrounding him, as well as the unreliable stories supplied by the people who claimed to be protecting her.
A key revelation, reported in the Radio Times ending explainer, is that Harrison exposed Baden’s identity even after James warned him not to do so. That disclosure has lethal consequences and changes how the preceding events should be understood: Baden’s undercover role was not a side detail, and the people around Sophie were making consequential decisions about what she was allowed to know.

What really happened on the ferry?
The Season 1 ending deliberately refuses to provide a completely settled account of the ferry incident. Sophie is left confronting the possibility that there is only one remaining explanation for what happened, while the exact sequence of events and her motives remain unsettled at the boundary between seasons.
- The injury and presumed suicide attempt are the starting assumptions of the story, not a complete explanation.
- Sophie’s affair with Baden and his undercover identity place her inside a dangerous investigation.
- Harrison’s exposure of Baden is a decisive finale event with fatal consequences.
- The series does not turn every ferry detail or every motive into confirmed fact before Season 2.
That uncertainty is intentional. The finale closes the investigation into Sophie’s own crimes while preserving the question of why she made the choices that led to the ferry.

How Season 2 picks up the story
Season 2 moves Sophie’s investigation from San Francisco to London. Apple describes it as a new chapter in which she uses clues and stolen resources to enter elite society and investigate her past. She finds a possible connection to an heiress, then hears from a journalist who says they were working together on a scandal involving dangerous people Sophie has grown close to.
The eight-episode season premiered on February 21, 2025, and released weekly through April 11, 2025. Oliver Jackson-Cohen and Millie Brady return. New cast members include Phil Dunster, Gavin Drea, Rupert Graves, Tara Fitzgerald, Nina Sosanya, Joely Richardson and Freida Pinto.
In practical terms, Season 2 is not a reset: Sophie’s identity has been clarified, while her reasons, London history and links to the new scandal remain the forward-driving mysteries.
