On August 14, 2026, the Court recorded the respondents’ reported compliance and closed the proceedings involving the five. It directed a separate case on SMA treatment access; that case’s scheduled October 8, 2026 listing had no confirmed outcome in the available record as of that date.
What the Supreme Court directed
In M/s Cure SMA Foundation of India v. Union of India & Ors., W.P.(C) No. 460/2025, the Supreme Court on November 27, 2025 directed respondents six through ten—Samay Raina, Vipul Goyal, Balraj Paramjeet Singh Ghai, Sonali Thakkar and Nishant Jagadish Tanwar—to hold at least two programmes or events each month to generate funds for a corpus. The direction followed the respondents’ offer to organise events as a form of reparation and to publicise the cause. The Court’s order is available from the Supreme Court of India.
The Court said the comedians could persuade and invite people with disabilities whose success stories had been brought before it to participate. The programmes were intended to raise awareness and support timely treatment, with particular attention to people affected by SMA and other rare diseases.
Why the case arose
The petition was brought by Cure SMA Foundation of India over content the Court considered demeaning to people with disabilities. The Court framed the proposed events as reparative engagement with the affected community, rather than as a final ruling on the broader limits of online speech.

What the respondents reported doing
December 2025 and January 2026 shows
In February 2026, LiveLaw reported that affidavits filed by the comedians said four shows had taken place in Mumbai during December 2025 and January 2026. The filings reportedly said people with disabilities, including some people affected by SMA, had been invited to share experiences and perform. They also said the first row was reserved for them and tickets were complimentary. These are details reported from the respondents’ affidavits, not independently audited attendance or impact findings. LiveLaw’s February 5, 2026 report describes those filings.
Further activity recorded in August 2026
The Court’s August 14, 2026 order recorded fresh compliance affidavits describing numerous events, an approximately ₹12.55 lakh corpus and a disability-focused chess tournament held in Pune from March 14 to 16, 2026. The figure is the approximate corpus amount reported in the affidavits and recorded by the Court; it is not presented as an independently audited donation total. The order also recorded that some money had already been donated to the petitioner NGO and that the respondents offered the balance.

The order noted that, for four shows, the respondents reported logistical difficulty making specific arrangements to invite and seat people with disabilities. It also recorded their claims that those shows took place and revenue was earmarked for fundraising. This qualification matters: the filings did not describe every show as having the same participation arrangements.
What the August 2026 order changed
After recording the reported compliance, the Supreme Court closed the civil proceedings involving the five comedians. It also quashed the related criminal complaints and proceedings addressed in the order. The Court recorded that ₹15 lakh in costs imposed by its July 14 order had been deposited with the Registry.

The closure resolved the proceedings concerning these five respondents, not every legal or policy question raised by the underlying dispute. The Court expressly said: “We are cognisant that important larger issues regarding the scope of regulation of speech on internet-based social media remain to be dealt with.” Those broader questions were left for an appropriate case. In the same order, the Court directed a new suo motu writ petition titled “In Re: Lack of Adequate and Systematic Treatment for SMA Patients and Other Ancillary Issues.” It issued notice to the Union of India, returnable on October 8, 2026. That is a separate proceeding from the petition concerning the comedians. The available record does not confirm what happened at the October 8 listing, so no later outcome can be stated here.
