James Gunn’s Superman is a warm, busy launch for the new DCU. It skips the origin story, drops an already active Superman into a crowded Metropolis, and asks whether a world trained to distrust institutions can believe in someone genuinely good. David Corenswet’s open-hearted performance, Rachel Brosnahan’s forceful Lois Lane and a lively ensemble give the film its lift. The same abundance can make the first chapter feel overstuffed, especially for viewers arriving without DCU background.

This is a spoiler-light review. It discusses the film’s premise, themes and major character dynamics without revealing its ending.

A Superman who is already on the job

Gunn begins roughly three years into Superman’s career. Clark Kent works at the Daily Planet, Superman is a known presence in Metropolis, and the familiar Kansas childhood and first-flight montage are not the movie’s runway. The story instead opens after a public defeat, putting its hero’s reputation—and his confidence—under pressure.

That choice is efficient. Rather than spend another superhero film proving that Clark can fly, the movie tests what happens when his actions become public policy, international controversy and a matter of trust. It also makes the new DCU feel inhabited from its first scene: metahumans, rival heroes and strange technology already belong to this world.

#1 Best Overall

The trade-off is density. A viewer who knows only Superman may need to absorb several teams, aliases and political relationships while also following the central conflict. The film generally supplies enough context to keep moving, but its confidence that the audience will catch up is part of both its energy and its risk.

Goodness is the central dramatic problem

Gunn has described his Superman as “the ultimate good guy” and called the movie one about kindness and being good. Those ideas are not decorative slogans. The screenplay repeatedly treats Superman’s sincerity as something other characters must investigate.

Lois questions whether his interventions are ethically defensible when they affect people and nations beyond Metropolis. His fellow heroes measure themselves against his example rather than simply cheering him on. Lex Luthor turns public uncertainty into a weapon. Even the audience is invited to ask whether an altruist can remain altruistic once every rescue has geopolitical consequences.

That skepticism gives Corenswet useful material. His Superman is powerful without being remote, but the performance allows hurt, embarrassment and impatience to surface when his motives are doubted. The film’s optimism works best when it shows goodness as a discipline—something Clark chooses while frightened or angry—not as an effortless personality trait.

Lois Lane makes the argument concrete

Brosnahan’s Lois is not a romantic accessory waiting for Superman to finish saving the city. She is an investigative reporter with her own standards, deadlines and appetite for uncomfortable facts. Her relationship with Clark is tested by a dispute over how Superman should use his power, particularly when the consequences extend across borders.

That disagreement gives the romance friction that many Superman adaptations treat as an afterthought. Lois does not need to be convinced that Clark is extraordinary; she needs to decide what responsible heroism looks like. Brosnahan plays her as quick, skeptical and emotionally direct, while Corenswet’s Clark is more exposed around her than he is in costume.

The relationship also connects the film’s private and public stakes. Their arguments are about trust, but they are also about who gets to define the truth of an intervention: the person who performs it, the people affected by it or the reporter documenting it.

The Daily Planet turns journalism into action

The newsroom is a working part of the plot rather than a nostalgic backdrop. Reporting, verification and exposing corruption help drive the conflict with Luthor. Clark’s double life therefore has an unusually strong professional dimension: Superman can reach places no human reporter can, but journalism decides how claims become public knowledge.

The film treats that process as collaborative. The Daily Planet staff are not interchangeable comic relief; their reporting helps challenge power. That emphasis gives the story a civic counterweight to its spectacular fights and makes Lois’s insistence on evidence feel consequential.

Gunn has said, “Journalism is important to me.” The movie’s most persuasive version of that idea is not a speech about the press. It is the sight of people doing patient, sometimes dangerous work to establish what actually happened.

A crowded but appealing superhero community

Superman is one of several gifted do-gooders on Earth. The Justice Gang, Metamorpho and other established figures broaden the film beyond a solitary savior story. Their presence lets the movie ask whether Superman’s example changes other heroes, rather than assuming his moral authority is complete.

The Justice Gang

The team begins with its own assumptions about justice and gradually confronts the difference between effective intervention and responsible intervention. Their evolving relationship with Superman supplies some of the film’s sharper character contrasts.

Metamorpho

Metamorpho embodies the possibility that heroism can be learned. His response to Superman is less about worship than about discovering a model for what to do with extraordinary abilities.

The Planet staff

The reporters and editors keep the ensemble grounded. Their investigations make the world feel less like a parade of cameos and more like a community in which ordinary expertise matters.

The downside is narrative traffic. Not every supporting figure receives equal space, and the accumulation of powers, costumes and backstories can blunt the emotional focus. Viewers who enjoy comic-book world-building will find generous texture; viewers seeking a clean Superman-and-Lois story may feel the film keeps opening new tabs.

Lex Luthor and the film’s political scale

Nicholas Hoult’s Lex is not merely a wealthy villain waiting in a laboratory. He understands that Superman’s greatest vulnerability is public interpretation. By shaping uncertainty around the hero’s actions, Lex attacks the social permission Superman needs to operate.

This makes the conflict larger than a contest of strength. Superman can stop an immediate physical threat, but he cannot punch a false narrative out of existence. Lois and the Planet’s reporting become essential because the villain’s battlefield includes institutions, borders and public trust.

The geopolitical material gives the film seriousness without abandoning comic-book absurdity. Flying rescues, a giant fortress and a super-powered dog share space with arguments about sovereignty and accountability. The tonal mixture is deliberate, though some transitions are brisk enough to feel like separate movies competing for the same runtime.

Whimsy, action and the Gunn tonal signature

The film is playful without making Superman a joke. Its strange creatures, eccentric heroes and visual gags coexist with sincere emotional stakes. That balance distinguishes it from darker, more operatic screen interpretations of the character.

The action is most effective when it reveals character. Superman’s instinct is to protect first; other heroes may prioritize strategy, reputation or winning. The choreography and effects are designed to keep those differences visible, not simply to escalate destruction.

At times, the film’s enthusiasm becomes clutter. A new power, location or supporting character can arrive before the previous idea has settled. The result is rarely dull, but it can be less graceful than the hero it is celebrating.

How it compares with earlier Superman films

Comparison Gunn’s Superman What that means for viewers
Starting point Superman is already active; the origin is skipped. More room for ethics, journalism and an established DCU, less introductory mythology.
Tone Sincere, whimsical and openly hopeful. A brighter alternative to more somber or operatic interpretations.
Central relationship Lois challenges Superman’s public choices as a reporter and partner. The romance carries an ethical argument, not only chemistry.
World-building Multiple metahumans and teams are present from the outset. Comic-book scale arrives quickly, with a corresponding risk of overload.
Main conflict Physical danger is tied to reputation, institutions and geopolitical consequences. Reporting and public trust matter as much as superhuman force.

Reception and opening-weekend context

Early indicators were positive but should be read as a snapshot, not a current lifetime verdict. The Associated Press reported approximately $122 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales and $95 million from 78 international markets during the opening period in July 2025. The same report cited an approximately $225 million production cost, an 82% Rotten Tomatoes score at that time and an A− CinemaScore.

Those figures date from the opening weekend and can change in interpretation as later theatrical, home-viewing and audience data accumulate. The Atlantic’s July 8, 2025 review praised the film’s sincerity and whimsy while warning that its many established metahumans could put off some viewers. That split is a useful description of the experience: the abundance is the attraction and the obstacle.

Where and how to watch

The international theatrical rollout began July 9, 2025, followed by nationwide U.S. theaters and IMAX on July 11. Amazon’s Prime Video listing, checked September 30, 2026, reported a 2-hour-10-minute runtime and listed a $29.99 purchase and $24.99 rental. The listing said renters have 30 days to start and 48 hours to finish after starting. Digital prices, rights and availability vary by country and can change, so verify the current listing before paying.

Is Superman worth watching?

Yes, if you want a Superman film that makes kindness an active challenge rather than a branding adjective. The movie gives Lois and journalism real agency, lets public trust drive the conflict and builds a DCU where heroism is communal.

Go in prepared for a fast-moving ensemble rather than a self-contained origin story. The film’s crowded mythology may test viewers who prefer a narrow character study, but its warmth, visual imagination and conviction give the new DCU a recognizable point of view.
