Superman wins, but the final victory is less about overpowering Luthor than choosing what his alien heritage means. The two credits scenes then offer quiet character jokes—not a major sequel announcement.
Spoilers for the entire film, including both credits scenes.
Superman wins the final battle, but the film’s real resolution is about the kind of person he chooses to be. He defeats Ultraman, helps close Lex Luthor’s dimensional Rift, rescues the people trapped in Luthor’s pocket universe, and exposes Luthor’s role in the international conflict. Superman does not kill Lex, even after Lex’s manipulation nearly destroys Metropolis. Instead, he defines his strength through compassion, responsibility, and the freedom to choose what is right.

The two credits scenes are much smaller in scale. The mid-credits scene shows Superman and Krypto quietly watching Earth from the Moon. The final scene features Superman and Mister Terrific inspecting a repaired building and arguing over one uneven seam. Neither scene introduces a new villain or directly announces the next DCU storyline.
What is Lex Luthor’s plan?
Lex’s scheme is not simply an attempt to beat Superman in a physical fight. He engineers an international conflict involving Boravia and Jarhanpur, applies political and media pressure against Superman, and uses a dimensional Rift to connect Earth to a pocket universe.
The Rift destabilizes parts of Metropolis and provides a place where Luthor can hold prisoners. It also gives him a strategic advantage: from his communications hub, Luthor can monitor events and influence the battle through surveillance drones. His campaign against Superman works because it attacks both Superman’s reputation and his ability to respond effectively.
Luthor presents himself as someone protecting humanity from an alien threat. However, the finale shows that his supposed concern for people is secondary to his resentment of Superman and his need for control. He is willing to leave large numbers of people in danger if saving them would also benefit the part of Metropolis he despises or undermine his own position.

Superman’s main physical opponent in the finale is Ultraman, the Superman-like weapon created and controlled by Luthor. The fight takes place at the edge of the Rift, where Ultraman’s power and Luthor’s remote supervision initially put Superman at a disadvantage.
The turning point comes when Superman uses Krypto to destroy Luthor’s surveillance drones. Once Luthor can no longer observe and direct the fight with the same precision, Superman regains the tactical advantage. He defeats Ultraman and sends him into a black hole inside the pocket universe.
The victory is therefore a combination of courage, improvisation, and teamwork. Superman does not win simply by overpowering an identical-looking enemy. He changes the conditions of the fight by cutting off Luthor’s control, with Krypto’s help.
How the Rift is closed
After defeating Ultraman, Superman reaches Luthor’s communications hub. Mister Terrific is already working to reverse the Rift, but the process requires access to the system and the correct reversal code.

Mister Terrific enters the code, and the Rift begins to mend. Luthor’s prisoners are freed as the pocket universe is released from his control. The repair is not presented as a perfectly tidy restoration—one of the credits scenes later makes a joke about an unevenly reassembled building—but the immediate catastrophe is stopped and the trapped people are rescued.
Luthor could help close the Rift, but he refuses because doing so would save people outside the part of Metropolis he values. That choice exposes the difference between Luthor’s rhetoric and his actual morality. He claims to act for humanity while treating human lives as pieces in a personal war against Superman.
Why Superman says his humanity is his strength
The confrontation with Luthor is the emotional center of the ending. Luthor sees Superman’s alien origin as proof that ordinary human beings are weak and that Superman’s power gives him the right to stand above them.
Superman rejects that logic. His answer is not that he is secretly no different from a biological human being. He is Kryptonian, and the film does not erase that part of his identity. Instead, he argues that humanity is expressed through qualities such as love, fear, mistakes, empathy, and the effort to keep making better choices.
That idea resolves the mystery surrounding the damaged message from Superman’s biological parents. Earlier in the film, Clark believes the recording tells him to serve Earth and be good. When he learns that the message was incomplete or misunderstood, he has to decide whether his identity is determined by Kryptonian instructions, his human upbringing, or something else.
His answer is that morality is chosen. Superman is not good because he inherited a perfect destiny, and he is not evil because he came from a civilization that might have had different ambitions. He chooses compassion and responsibility repeatedly, even when doing so is difficult. His heritage explains where he came from; it does not make his decisions for him.
What happens to Lex Luthor?
Luthor loses both the battle and the public standing he worked to protect. The Daily Planet publishes evidence connecting him to the foreign conflict, and news coverage turns against him. The public realizes that Superman was wrongly blamed.

Lex is removed on a gurney wearing a neck brace and handcuffs, headed toward Belle Reve prison. His defeat is especially painful because it is not limited to physical injuries. His public image, authority, and claim to be humanity’s defender all collapse at once.
Superman does not kill him. At one point, Krypto attacks Luthor, but Superman orders the dog to stop. The moment reinforces the film’s central moral contrast: having power does not create an entitlement to cruelty, and winning does not justify revenge.
What happens to Superman and Lois Lane?
Superman and Lois reunite after the rescue. Their relationship has been strained because they approach the world differently. Lois is suspicious of institutions, authority, and untested motives, while Superman tends to believe in people and their capacity to improve.
Those differences remain part of their relationship, but they do not destroy it. They kiss and affirm their love. The film therefore does not leave Superman isolated after saving the world. His life is defined by connections—with Lois, Ma and Pa Kent, Krypto, the Justice Gang, and the wider human community.
Is Supergirl in a post-credits scene?
No. Supergirl appears in the film’s final sequence before the credits, not in either of the two post-credits scenes.
After the main conflict, Superman returns to the Fortress of Solitude to recover from Kryptonite poisoning. The Fortress robots treat him, and Supergirl arrives looking for Krypto. She identifies herself as Superman’s cousin and reclaims the dog. Krypto enthusiastically knocks her down and licks her face.
The scene also explains why Supergirl can become intoxicated. She says that she parties on planets with red suns; a yellow sun prevents Kryptonians from getting drunk in the same way. The gag presents her as a deliberately contrasting version of Kryptonian identity. Superman is earnest, duty-focused, and deeply invested in Earth, while Supergirl is reckless, irreverent, and accustomed to moving between worlds.
Her arrival also reveals that Krypto is Supergirl’s dog rather than simply Superman’s unusually destructive pet. The scene establishes a character and a wider DCU connection, but it should not be confused with a credits tag.
Why does Superman watch the Kent family videos?
The last narrative scene takes place in the Fortress. After another treatment from the robots, Superman asks to watch footage of Ma and Pa Kent. The videos show Pa Kent holding baby Clark above his head and pretending to fly him through imaginary skies.

The emotional point is that Clark’s identity is shaped not only by Krypton’s history or his extraordinary abilities, but by ordinary acts of love. The final image treats the Kents’ care as a living legacy that Clark carries forward.
This does not mean Superman permanently rejects Krypton or denies that he is Kryptonian. He rejects Kryptonian determinism—the idea that his biology or a message from his birth parents must dictate his morality. The recording explains his origin, but it does not have the final authority over his character. His upbringing and his own continuing choices do.
How many credits scenes are there?
There are two credits scenes:
- One mid-credits scene, shown during the credits.
- One end-credits scene, shown after the credits have completely finished.
Both are brief, non-essential character moments. You do not need either scene to understand the resolution of the main plot, and neither provides a major revelation about the future of the DCU.
Mid-credits scene explained: Superman and Krypto on the Moon
The first credits scene shows Superman and Krypto sitting on the Moon and looking toward Earth. There is no meaningful dialogue and no hidden character reveal.
The image works as a quiet coda after the chaos of the finale. The film has just moved through international conflict, media manipulation, the Rift, and a battle with Ultraman. The credits scene reduces the scale to two companions sharing a peaceful view of home.
The shot had also appeared in the film’s marketing, so it is not intended as a secret DCU revelation. Its purpose is emotional rather than explanatory: Superman and Krypto are together, and Earth is safe enough for them to stop and look at it.

End-credits scene explained: Superman and Mister Terrific’s repaired building
The final credits scene takes place in Metropolis after the Rift has been reversed. Mister Terrific has helped restore the damaged city, but one building has a visibly uneven seam where it was put back together.
Superman points out the imperfection. Mister Terrific becomes irritated and walks away. Superman immediately recognizes that he has been needlessly critical and mutters that he can be a jerk sometimes.
The joke is small but revealing. Superman is morally sincere, yet he can also be socially awkward, overly literal, and oblivious to how his comments sound. Mister Terrific is highly capable and has just helped save the city; being criticized over a cosmetic flaw is understandably frustrating.
The scene also explains why the building is not perfectly restored. Mister Terrific does not reconstruct every part of Metropolis flawlessly. The uneven seam is the joke, not evidence of a new threat or a hidden failure in the Rift repair.
Do the credits scenes set up the next DCU movie?
No direct sequel setup appears in either scene. The Moon scene introduces no new villain, location, or plot device. The Mister Terrific scene resolves a humorous aftermath of the rescue rather than launching a storyline.
That does not mean the film has no future-facing material. Supergirl appears before the final Kent-family-video sequence, and the Justice Gang members are positioned to remain relevant in the shared universe. A later announcement also confirmed a follow-up titled Man of Tomorrow for a July 9, 2027 theatrical release, but that announcement is separate from the ending and is not revealed by either credits scene.

In other words, viewers should not read the tags as a tease for Batman, Brainiac, the Lanterns, or a specifically identified sequel threat. They are rewards for staying through the credits, not obligatory pieces of franchise homework.
What the ending means
The ending argues that Superman’s greatest power is not his Kryptonian biology. It is his ability to choose solidarity with people who are different from him.
Luthor believes power proves superiority. The damaged Kryptonian message raises the possibility that Superman might simply be following an inherited purpose. Superman’s final answer rejects both ideas. He is neither a conqueror obeying Krypton nor a hero whose goodness comes automatically from being stronger than everyone else.
He is a person shaped by relationships and accountable for his decisions. Lois challenges him. The Kents raise him. Krypto accompanies him. Mister Terrific helps him. Humanity gives him a home, and Superman chooses to protect that home without pretending he is biologically human.

That is why the final Kent family footage matters more than a new villain reveal would have. The last image is not about what Superman can destroy. It is about what kind of legacy he wants to continue.

Optional comic context
The Moon image has been compared to imagery associated with Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s All-Star Superman. That is a contextual comparison rather than an official tie-in claim, and the film does not require familiarity with the comic. Readers interested in the visual and thematic tradition surrounding Superman can treat the All-Star Superman graphic novel as optional background reading.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Superman defeats Ultraman, exposes Lex Luthor, closes the Rift, and chooses compassion over inherited destiny. Supergirl appears before the credits, while the two actual credits scenes show Superman and Krypto on the Moon and Superman jokingly criticize Mister Terrific’s imperfect repair. Neither scene directly teases a specific future DCU film.
