Suno AI Review (2026): How to Use Suno, What It Costs, and Whether You Can Monetize Its Music

Suno can turn prompts, lyrics, and audio sketches into complete song drafts. This 2026 guide explains its plans, creation workflow, advanced tools, and the crucial difference between commercial-use rights and copyright.

Verdict: Suno is a capable AI music-creation platform for quickly turning prompts, lyrics, and audio sketches into complete songs. Its newest model, v5.5, adds Voices, Custom Models, and My Taste, while paid plans include commercial-use rights for eligible songs made during the subscription. Suno is best for ideas, demos, and fast production—not precise control over every note or guaranteed copyright protection.

Feature and pricing details below reflect Suno’s published information checked August 18, 2026. Availability can vary by plan, location, platform, and rollout; confirm the live pricing page before buying.

What is Suno AI?

Suno is an AI music platform that generates songs from natural-language descriptions, user-written lyrics, and uploaded or recorded audio. Depending on the tools available to an account, users can also extend, remix, cover, edit, or separate parts of generated music. Suno describes its output as original songs, but that does not guarantee legal originality or remove a user’s responsibility to have rights to uploaded material. Its Terms of Service prohibit content that infringes another party’s rights.

It is a strong fit for beginners, lyricists without production skills, social-media creators, and musicians who want to turn a rough idea into an arrangement quickly. Songwriters and producers can use it for ideation, demos, and stems. It is less suited to work requiring exact note-by-note control, reliable continuity across many generations, or traditional multitrack production without AI artifacts.

What Suno costs and what each plan includes

Suno’s pricing page lists monthly billing at $0 for Free, $8 for Pro, and $24 for Premier. Annual billing advertises a 20% saving; check the checkout page for the final charge, taxes, and terms. The plan comparison below reflects the published pricing page checked August 18, 2026; Suno’s marketing pages have sometimes described generation volume differently, so use the live pricing page as the reference before purchasing.

Plan Monthly price Credits Notable features Commercial use
Free $0 50 credits, renewed daily v4.5-all; standard features; uploads up to 8 minutes; shared queue; no stem separation or add-on credit purchases No; intended for non-commercial use
Pro $8 when billed monthly 2,500, refreshed monthly Advanced models including v5.5; advanced editing; Voices and Custom Models; stem tools; uploads up to 30 minutes; add-on credits; priority generation with up to 10 concurrent songs listed Yes, for new songs made while subscribed
Premier $24 when billed monthly 10,000 monthly Pro features, Suno Studio, additional stem-separation capability, and priority generation with up to 10 concurrent songs listed Yes, under the same creation-timing framework as Pro

Credits do not roll over month to month. Purchased top-up credits do not expire, but Suno says an active subscription is required to use them. Feature labels and limits can change; consult Suno’s pricing page for the current comparison.

Which plan makes sense?

  • Choose Free to learn the interface, make personal experiments, and test whether the results suit you. Do not plan to monetize songs made on this plan.
  • Choose Pro if you regularly create and need commercial-use rights for new songs, advanced tools, longer uploads, Voices, or Custom Models. It is the practical starting point for most commercial creators.
  • Choose Premier if you need Suno Studio or expect to use substantially more credits. Its higher tier adds capacity and production tools; it is not a guarantee of better-sounding generations than Pro.

How to make your first song

Suno’s web interface changes over time, but the basic Create workflow is straightforward:

  1. Open Suno and sign in.
  2. Go to Create.
  3. Choose a simple song description for a quick generation, or switch to custom lyrics if you already have words and want to define sections.
  4. Enter the concept or lyrics, then add a title and useful style details such as genre, mood, voice, instrumentation, energy, or arrangement.
  5. Select a model if the account offers more than one.
  6. Click Create and listen to both generated options.
  7. Keep the stronger result, then use an available editing, extension, remix, cover, or download option if it suits the song and your plan.

A simple description works well for fast experiments, instrumentals, and background music. For example: “Cinematic electronic pop about leaving a small town; female vocal; hopeful but bittersweet; pulsing synth bass, live drums, wide chorus, gradual build.” Treat the output as a draft to assess, not a guaranteed final recording.

How to write prompts that give you more control

A useful prompt prioritizes a few musical decisions rather than piling on every idea. Specify the genre, mood, vocal character, energy or tempo, core instruments, production feel, song structure, and lyrical subject. Give special directions for a chorus, bridge, intro, or ending only when those details matter.

Weak prompt More directed prompt
Make a sad rock song. Mid-tempo alternative rock; restrained male vocal; intimate verse; distorted guitars entering in the pre-chorus; explosive melodic chorus; live-sounding drums; bittersweet lyrics about deleting an old voicemail; short instrumental bridge; layered backing vocals in the final chorus.

When a result misses the mark, change one or two variables at a time. Keep the genre fixed while changing the voice, then test the arrangement or lyrical theme separately. This makes it easier to see which instruction helped. Long prompts with competing directions can make the result less predictable.

How to use your own lyrics

Custom lyrics suit writers who want to preserve their words and indicate a song’s structure. Put section labels on their own lines to make the intended form clear:

[Verse 1]
...

[Pre-Chorus]
...

[Chorus]
...

[Verse 2]
...

[Bridge]
...

[Final Chorus]
...

Section tags guide the model but do not force exact compliance. Suno may repeat or omit a section, change a pronunciation, or rearrange the performance. If a name or unusual word is mispronounced, try a phonetic spelling, syllable breaks, or punctuation that clarifies phrasing. These adjustments can help, but do not guarantee a correct take.

What v5.5, Voices, Custom Models, and My Taste do

v5.5

Suno launched v5.5 on March 26, 2026. The company describes it as its most expressive and personal model, with Voices, Custom Models, and My Taste, alongside richer arrangements, sharper vocals, and more dynamic sound across genres. That is Suno’s positioning, not a guarantee of improvement in every genre or prompt. Model quality, control, consistency, and editability are separate considerations: a strong-sounding generation may still miss the requested structure or require repair. See Suno’s v5.5 announcement.

Voices

Voices lets eligible users make songs with their own voice rather than a default Suno singer. Suno lists it for Pro and Premier subscribers, requires users to be at least 18, and notes that it may not be available in every location.

  1. In Create, select Add Voice, then choose an existing voice or Create Voice.
  2. Choose a source from your library, make a live recording, or upload audio. The recording must be between 15 seconds and 4 minutes; Suno asks you to select the best two minutes.
  3. Use an isolated vocal when possible. Suno can also attempt to isolate vocals from audio with background music.
  4. Complete the spoken-phrase verification and confirm that you have the right to use the voice.
  5. Name and save the voice profile, then select it in the Create form.
  6. Add lyrics and style details, confirm v5.5 is selected, and create. Suno recommends increasing the Audio Influence slider if the result does not sound sufficiently like your voice.

Suno says the workflow generates two songs. Do not upload a collaborator’s or public figure’s voice without the necessary consent and rights. For setup and limits, see Suno’s Voices guide and its Voices FAQ.

Custom Models

Pro and Premier users can make a private model based on their own music catalog. Suno requires at least six songs and says users must own the rights to all of them. Choose Create Custom Model from the model dropdown; Suno says processing takes about 2–5 minutes. Users can create up to three models, which cannot be shared with other users. The feature is a way to bias generations toward a catalog’s characteristics, not a promise of exact artistic identity. Details are in Suno’s Custom Models guide.

My Taste

My Taste learns the genres and moods a user tends to select and applies that personalization when using the Magic Wand. Suno lists it as available to everyone. It can reduce repetitive prompt-writing, but may be counterproductive when you want an unfamiliar direction; compare with a neutral prompt where the interface allows it.

Uploads, editing, stems, and Suno Studio

The pricing page lists audio uploads up to 8 minutes on Free and up to 30 minutes on Pro and Premier. Uploads can include a hummed melody, a loop, a demo, or a vocal recording, but uploading a file does not grant permission to use it. Suno requires you to have the applicable rights and permissions.

Tool What it is for
Extend Continue a song beyond its existing material.
Remix Generate a new interpretation from existing material.
Cover Rework a song in another style or performance.
Replace or add section Repair or change a portion instead of discarding the whole track.
Crop or fade Make basic finishing adjustments.
Stem separation Separate vocals and instrumental parts for further editing.
Suno Studio A more involved production environment listed for Premier.

Suno’s release notes describe a web Duration slider for v5.5, Studio 1.2, sample workflows, hooks, and stem extraction into as many as 12 stems in the described updates. Availability can depend on plan, model, platform, or rollout. Check Suno’s release notes for current feature status.

How good is Suno for real creative work?

Suno’s practical advantage is speed: a creator can move from a short brief or lyric to a complete musical draft without first building an arrangement in a digital audio workstation. That makes it useful for brainstorming, demos, social content, and background music when the result fits the project.

Assess a generation on separate dimensions rather than treating “good song” as one test: vocal sound and pronunciation, lyric fidelity, arrangement, transitions, genre fit, mix, and consistency from verse to chorus. A track may work as a sketch or short-form clip while still needing editing before a release. The platform offers iteration and repair tools, but it does not ensure exact repeated choruses, seamless structure, or production free of artifacts. Expect to audition alternatives and keep the best parts rather than assuming one click will deliver a finished master.

  • Strengths: low learning barrier, rapid generation, complete-song drafts, multiple ways to iterate, and growing personalization and editing tools.
  • Limitations: less precise control than a conventional DAW, variable output quality and structure, possible lyric or pronunciation errors, and rights considerations for monetized work and uploaded material.

Can you monetize songs made with Suno?

Suno says songs made while subscribed to Pro or Premier receive commercial-use rights under its terms. It lists streaming distribution, independent sales such as Bandcamp, and use in film, television, or games among possible uses. Free-plan songs are intended for personal, non-commercial use. These permissions remain subject to Suno’s current terms, applicable law, third-party rights, and the policies of distributors or platforms. See Suno’s paid-subscription rights guidance and its distribution guidance.

  • Over 100 internal drum and instrument sounds including acoustic and electric pianos, synth leads, pads and more

Do not assume that upgrading gives old free-plan songs commercial rights. Suno says rights are not granted retroactively by default, although it may offer retroactive rights in some cases. If a specific older song matters commercially, ask Suno about that song; otherwise, create the intended commercial version while already subscribed to an eligible plan. Suno says users retain commercial-use rights for songs made while subscribed even if they later cancel. The plan active when each song was created is the key detail. See Suno’s guidance on pre-subscription songs and its ownership and cancellation guidance.

Commercial permission, ownership, and copyright are different

A paid plan’s commercial-use permission is not a guarantee of copyright protection, and Suno’s description of ownership under its terms does not settle copyright law. Suno warns that entirely AI-created material may not qualify for copyright protection in the United States because copyright protects human-created material. It says human-written lyrics may be protectable independently, and that treatment of human creative contribution can differ by jurisdiction. A prompt alone should not be treated as proof of authorship. Read Suno’s copyright guidance for its explanation.

Concept What it means
Ownership under Suno’s terms How Suno describes control or ownership of output under the applicable plan and terms.
Commercial-use rights Contractual permission to use eligible songs commercially under Suno’s rules.
Copyright protection Legal protection determined by copyright law, jurisdiction, and the human creative contribution.

Before distributing a track, check the applicable terms and the distributor’s rules. Commercial-use permission cannot guarantee copyright protection, freedom from third-party claims, or acceptance by every distributor.

What to consider before uploading recordings

Suno’s terms say users grant it a broad, worldwide, non-exclusive, sublicensable, assignable, royalty-free, perpetual, and irrevocable license to use submitted content and applicable voice-model rights in connection with providing, monetizing, promoting, marketing, and improving its services and related models. This makes it important to understand the terms before uploading unreleased commercial recordings or confidential work.

  • Upload only material for which you have the necessary rights and permissions.
  • Confirm that collaborators have authorized the use of their recordings, samples, and contributions.
  • Consider the implications before submitting personal vocal recordings or other sensitive material.
  • Read the current Suno Terms of Service before using material you cannot afford to expose beyond your own control.

Fix common problems

The song ignores the prompt

Shorten the style prompt to the three most important musical traits, label lyric sections clearly, and vary one instruction at a time. If only one portion is wrong, use section replacement where available rather than regenerating everything.

Words are mispronounced or the chorus changes

Try phonetic spelling, syllable breaks, punctuation, and shorter lyric lines for difficult words. For a chorus that varies between repetitions, use identical, simpler lyrics and a clear section label. Generate alternatives; if exact repetition is essential, edit the audio or stems in a DAW.

  • Powerful Creative Tools: Never hit a wrong note with Scale Mode, trigger lush chords from a single key or drum pad, and create and mutate wild arpeggios

The track is too short or long

Use the Duration slider if it is available in your v5.5 web workflow, extend the song, or specify the desired intro, outro, or ending in the prompt. Crop or fade afterward if needed.

Your voice sounds unlike you

Check that v5.5 is selected, increase Audio Influence, and try a clean acapella source. If verification fails, read the displayed phrase clearly in a quiet room, use a clean recording, and confirm Voices is available in your location. Suno recommends contacting support if the problem persists. See its Voices guide.

You want to monetize a free-plan track

Do not assume an upgrade resolves its status. Ask Suno whether that specific song can receive retroactive rights, or remake the commercially intended version while subscribed to Pro or Premier.

Alternatives to consider

The right comparison depends on what you want to make. Readers seeking another complete-song generator can evaluate Udio. Creators already working in an audio-production ecosystem may also explore ElevenLabs Music, while users focused more on instrumental generation, sound design, or loops may look at Stable Audio. Check each service’s current features, pricing, and rights terms directly before choosing; those details are not compared here.

Who should use Suno?

Suno is worth trying if you want to turn ideas into listenable musical drafts quickly, especially if you are a beginner, lyricist, or creator who does not want to start in a DAW. Pro is the sensible choice when you need commercial-use rights for new work and want advanced creation tools. Premier is for heavier use or a workflow that benefits from Studio. Choose another production approach when exact musical control is central, or seek professional legal advice when copyright certainty is a requirement.
