Sumo: Spirit Weighs Nothing is Erik Shirai’s 2026 documentary about the people and obligations behind professional sumo. Following four wrestlers over a year, it looks beyond the spectacle of competition to the routines, rituals, and personal uncertainty that shape life inside a stable.
What is Sumo: Spirit Weighs Nothing about?
The film follows four rikishi at different stages of their careers as they train, compete, and consider what comes next. Its year-long observational frame gives the story room to move between tournament pressure and the everyday rhythms of stable life: a communal world with its own discipline and obligations. AFI FEST’s description presents the film as a portrait of both the wrestlers’ individual struggles and the community they inhabit. AFI FEST
Who does the documentary follow?
- Terunofuji: presented in the festival description as a yokozuna, sumo’s highest rank.
- Hiradoumi: a rising star whose career is still advancing.
- Yonezawaryu and Kosei: younger wrestlers who are still attending sumo school.
The contrast among these four subjects is central to the film’s premise: they share a world and its routines, but face different prospects and degrees of uncertainty. AFI FEST
What does the film’s approach reveal about sumo?
Reviews describe the documentary as attentive to the work surrounding the bouts as well as the competition itself. Screen International highlights details such as preparing the ring, tournament rhythms, and the wrestlers’ routines. Time Out points to the tension between sumo’s ceremonial setting and the physical demands placed on its athletes. Together, those observations suggest a film interested in how ritual and exertion coexist, rather than treating sumo as spectacle alone.

Screen International calls it a “yearning, melancholic portrait of a ritualized sport,” praising its empathetic, cinematic approach. Time Out awarded it four out of five stars and described it as a fly-on-the-wall documentary that demystifies sumo and humanizes its practitioners. These are the assessments of those individual outlets, not evidence of a universal critical consensus. Screen International · Time Out
How does it address the physical cost of training?
The film’s focus on disciplined routines also brings attention to the physical demands of a wrestler’s life. Time Out’s review reports that the documentary discusses pressure to eat large amounts and cites “10,000 calories a day” as a figure for wrestlers’ consumption. That figure should be understood as a claim reported by the review, not as a verified or universal dietary measure. The same review states that wrestlers’ life expectancy is “10-20 years shorter than their compatriots”; the underlying study or official data for that comparison is not established here, so it should not be treated as settled population-wide fact.
