This retrospective calendar includes major theatrical releases, limited openings, and streaming premieres that competed for attention during that period.
For documentary viewers, the schedule is also a useful snapshot of the broader film market: franchise films, literary adaptations, horror releases, animation, auteur projects, and streaming titles all shared the same summer window.

How to read the 2025 summer calendar
The dates below are U.S. release dates. “Theatrical” means the film opened in cinemas; “limited” indicates an initial release in fewer theaters before expansion; and “streaming” identifies a home-platform debut rather than a U.S. theatrical opening.
Not every date falls inside the strict May 2–September 1 season. Another Simple Favor, for example, arrived on May 1, while the calendar includes it because it was part of the summer release conversation.

- Thunderbolts*: The asterisk was part of the theatrical title. Marvel later clarified that it points to the team’s identity as the New Avengers; the film was not simply released under a replacement title, The New Avengers.
- The Fantastic Four: First Steps: This is the official Marvel title, with a July 25, 2025 release date.
- Smurfs: The 2025 film was listed as Smurfs, without “The.”
- Streaming versus theatrical: Another Simple Favor, Fear Street: Prom Queen, Predator: Killer of Killers, and Happy Gilmore 2 should not be counted as U.S. theatrical releases.
- Limited versus wide release: Friendship opened in limited release on May 9 and expanded on May 23. The two dates describe different stages of the same theatrical rollout.
