Sugar stars Colin Farrell as John Sugar, a Los Angeles private investigator whose cases begin in the world of private-eye mystery. Season two has already completed its announced 2026 weekly release run. The series also has a major science-fiction reveal in season one, so the explanation below is marked as a spoiler.
What is Sugar about?
Apple describes Sugar as a contemporary take on the private-detective story. Farrell plays John Sugar, an American private investigator in Los Angeles. In the first season, he investigates the disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the beloved granddaughter of legendary Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel. The case draws him into the Siegel family’s secrets.
The setup is a noir-leaning Hollywood mystery: a missing person, a prominent family and a detective pursuing answers in Los Angeles. Apple’s official series page presents that premise without revealing the first season’s central genre twist.
Season-one spoiler: what is the science-fiction reveal?
Spoiler: John Sugar is an alien disguised as a human. The Associated Press described him this way in its June 12, 2026 streaming roundup. The reveal changes how the detective setup reads, but it does not erase the series’ focus on investigation and its Los Angeles setting.
