Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to play a text-file playlist in order, and loop the background as a separate input with -stream_loop -1. If you want the playlist video displayed over that background, combine the inputs with a filtergraph, choose the audio deliberately, encode for YouTube, then send the result to the ingestion address and stream key shown for your broadcast. The exact command depends on your files, audio plan and FFmpeg build, so test it before going live.
Choose the right playlist and background setup
This walkthrough treats a playlist as a local text file containing media filenames. An online playlist, directory sequence or custom feed needs a different input construction; FFmpeg does not treat those as interchangeable with a concat list.
- Playlist: the concat demuxer reads listed files consecutively. It is not the loop control.
- Background:
-stream_loop -1repeats a media input indefinitely. Put the option immediately before that input’s-i. - Composition: if the playlist video should appear over the background, use a complex filtergraph such as
overlay. If you only want sequential playlist playback, omit the background and overlay. - Audio: decide whether to use playlist audio, background audio, a separate audio input or silence. Map the intended audio explicitly rather than relying on automatic stream selection.

Build a compatible playlist file
Create the list
Make a UTF-8 text file named playlist.txt, with one file entry per line in the order you want the videos to play. For example:

file '/media/interview.mp4'Paths must resolve from the directory where you run FFmpeg, or be absolute paths. Quote paths containing spaces. If the list format or paths are wrong, FFmpeg may fail before connecting to YouTube.
Check compatibility and timestamps
The concat demuxer expects input files to have the same streams, codecs and time bases. Differences can cause timestamp gaps, errors or visible and audible artifacts at transitions. FFmpeg may use estimated durations; inaccurate duration information can also affect timestamps. If transitions misbehave, inspect the files and normalize them to compatible stream layouts and timing before building the live output. See FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation.
Prepare the background input
For a looping background video, the input order in the example below is playlist first and background second. That means playlist video is [0:v] and background video is [1:v] in a filtergraph. The background must be a visual you have permission to use; a live broadcast does not exempt its music, footage or images from copyright rules.
If the background is a still image rather than a video, use an image-input approach with a duration or image-loop behavior appropriate to your FFmpeg build. Do not assume that video input looping is the only way to repeat a still frame.

Compose, encode and send the stream
Example: playlist video over a looping background, with playlist audio
This template uses H.264 video and AAC audio in an RTMPS push workflow. Replace the paths and placeholder with the current ingestion URL plus stream name/key supplied for your YouTube broadcast. Do not publish a real stream key or place it in a public script or log.

It assumes the playlist has an audio stream to map; the optional map suffix ? lets FFmpeg proceed if it is absent, but then the output has no audio unless you map another source. The scale and crop filters fill a 1920×1080 canvas for the background and fit the playlist video inside it; adjust the canvas and filters to suit your content. The example’s 30 fps, bitrate and keyframe settings are illustrative, not a bitrate recommendation for every resolution or frame rate.
Choose the audio mapping intentionally
- Playlist audio:
-map 0:a:0?selects the first audio stream from the playlist input when present. - Background audio: use
-map 1:a:0?instead if that is the intended source. - Separate music or narration: add the licensed audio as its own input and map that input’s audio stream.
- Silence: create a silent audio source if your output workflow requires an audio stream; do not accidentally broadcast unwanted audio.
When media files have different audio layouts or sample rates, test transitions and consider normalizing the playlist first. YouTube’s published RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio. Consult its encoder settings page for current guidance.
Use YouTube’s current stream details and encoder guidance
Get the ingestion address and stream name/key from the YouTube Live control room or the relevant API resource for that stream; the API describes ingestion details and stream health fields in its LiveStreams reference. Google recommends RTMPS for secure streaming. Its RTMPS ingestion guide describes the protocol and port 443. Use the exact endpoint and stream name/key supplied for your broadcast rather than assuming one fixed URL.

YouTube’s published encoder settings recommend a two-second keyframe interval and say not to exceed four seconds. The page also specifies constant-bitrate encoding and lists supported video choices including H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for its documented RTMP/RTMPS settings. Available bitrate values vary by resolution and frame rate, so check the current resolution-specific table before changing the example’s video bitrate or frame rate. YouTube’s guidance also says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not results from a test of this command.
The example uses an FLV output container for the RTMPS push. If your chosen codec, FFmpeg build or YouTube workflow differs, validate the combination against the current YouTube settings and your installed FFmpeg documentation. YouTube also supports HLS ingestion for workflows that need segment-based delivery; Google notes that HLS generally has higher latency than RTMP-based ingestion in its ingestion protocol comparison.
Preflight before the intended broadcast
- Confirm every playlist path resolves and the list is in the intended order.
- Check that playlist files have compatible streams, codecs and time bases; investigate duration or timestamp problems before going live.
- Confirm which input is the background and verify the filter labels match input order.
- Verify the output video and audio mappings match your editorial intent, including what should happen when a playlist item lacks audio.
- Check that your available upload bandwidth can sustain the chosen output bitrate.
- Use the ingestion endpoint and stream name/key currently provided for the YouTube stream, keeping the key private.
- Run a test with representative motion and audio, then inspect YouTube’s stream health before starting the intended broadcast, as YouTube advises in its encoder settings guidance.
Troubleshoot common failures
FFmpeg cannot open a playlist item
Check the spelling, quoting and path relative to the working directory. Try an absolute path for a quick diagnosis, then correct the playlist entry.
The stream errors or glitches at a playlist transition
Compare the files’ stream layouts, codecs, time bases and durations. The concat demuxer expects compatible inputs; normalize files that differ and retest timestamps and transitions.

The background appears on top or the wrong video is mapped
Check the input order and filter labels. With the example’s order, input 0 is the playlist and input 1 is the looping background; the overlay places the second labeled stream as the base and the first as the foreground.
There is no audio or the wrong audio plays
Inspect available streams and change the explicit audio map to the intended input. If some playlist files have no audio, account for that in the output design; mapping an optional stream does not create audio where none exists.
YouTube does not receive the broadcast
Recheck the current ingestion address, stream name/key and protocol, and confirm the key is not stale or mistyped. Keep the stream key secret. Verify network access to the endpoint and inspect YouTube’s stream health instead of assuming that an FFmpeg process alone means the broadcast is healthy.
YouTube reports poor stream health
Check the actual output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, audio and upload capacity against YouTube’s current encoder table. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with no more than four seconds; verify the selected resolution and frame rate’s bitrate requirements on its current settings page.

Copyright and live-stream eligibility
Only use documentary footage, background loops, music, stills and narration that you own or are licensed to broadcast on YouTube. A looping background does not make copyrighted material safe to reuse, and permission to watch or download a video is not necessarily permission to rebroadcast it. Check the rights for every playlist item and the background, and review YouTube’s applicable live-stream and monetization rules for your channel.
