To make an FFmpeg YouTube stream use less data on Indian broadband, lower its outgoing bitrate; upload data is driven mainly by bitrate multiplied by stream duration. You can also reduce resolution or frame rate to make a lower bitrate more workable, at the cost of image detail or motion smoothness. Test the result on your own connection before going live: no single setting guarantees good quality or stability on every broadband connection.
First, clarify which data you want to reduce
This guide is about the broadcaster’s upload from FFmpeg to YouTube. The bitrate you send is not necessarily the bitrate viewers use: YouTube transcodes live streams into different output formats for devices and networks. YouTube explains, “YouTube will automatically transcode your live stream to create many different output formats so that all of your viewers across many devices and networks can watch.” YouTube Help
Lowering FFmpeg’s bitrate reduces the stream’s outgoing upload volume. It does not, by itself, set a viewer’s playback quality or data consumption.
Estimate upload data from bitrate and duration
For planning, a sustained 1 Mbps stream sends about 0.45 decimal GB per hour before protocol overhead: 1,000,000 bits per second × 3,600 seconds ÷ 8 bits per byte. At a constant bitrate, halving the bitrate approximately halves the video data sent over the same duration. Actual transfer can differ because of audio, protocol overhead, and bitrate variation.

YouTube’s published live encoder guidance lists the following H.264 recommendations and minimums. The minimum is not a guarantee of acceptable picture quality.

| Output setting | Recommended video bitrate | Listed minimum |
|---|---|---|
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 4 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps |
| 360p30 | 4 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not measurements of Indian networks or promises about how a particular video will look. The 8 Mbps recommendation for 720p30 is a useful starting point, but if you deliberately choose a lower bitrate to save upload data, inspect the picture and test stability with your actual footage.
Balance bitrate, resolution, and frame rate
- Bitrate: The main direct control over how many encoded bits you send per second. Lowering it saves data but can make detail look blocky or smeared, especially in complex or fast-moving scenes.
- Resolution: Reducing output resolution lowers image detail and may make a low bitrate look more acceptable. Choose based on what viewers need to see in the documentary: fine text, landscapes, and detailed archival footage can expose quality loss.
- Frame rate: Reducing frame rate means fewer motion samples per second and may help when the content is largely static. Fast pans or action can look less smooth. YouTube’s guidance supports up to 60 fps.
- Codec: YouTube’s live guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, with codec-specific ranges. A more efficient codec may produce a similar result at a lower bitrate in some circumstances, but there is no universal quality equivalence; footage, encoder, hardware, and playback pipeline matter. Compatibility and processing demands also vary.
For the current codec-specific guidance and the recommended two-second keyframe interval, see YouTube’s live encoder settings. Consult the options supported by your installed encoder and FFmpeg build; FFmpeg documents its codecs and bitrate options at FFmpeg documentation.

Configure FFmpeg and test before the stream
There is no safe universal command for every input, encoder, or installed FFmpeg build. Instead, set the output deliberately and verify that your selected encoder supports each option. Use YouTube’s guidance as a baseline:
- Choose an output resolution and frame rate appropriate for the material; reduce either if the quality tradeoff is acceptable.
- Set an explicit video bitrate rather than relying on defaults. For an H.264 720p30 starting point, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps; a lower target may reduce data, but must be tested for quality.
- Use CBR for RTMP/RTMPS, as YouTube recommends.
- Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Choose a modest audio bitrate that keeps speech and any essential soundtrack intelligible.
- Use RTMPS when configuring the ingest URL: YouTube recommends it and says it encrypts data through to Google’s servers.
Keep your stream key private. Do not paste it into a public command, screenshot, or shared log.

Run a representative test
- Check your upload capacity with a speed test, as YouTube recommends. A short speed-test result is not a guarantee that the connection can sustain a live stream.
- Start a test stream using representative footage, movement, and audio—not just a static screen.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the test. If health is unstable, lower the bitrate and test again; do not assume that a nominal broadband speed alone proves the stream will hold.
- Review image detail, motion, and audio at the intended resolution. If quality is inadequate at the lower bitrate, raise it or reduce resolution/frame rate only where the content can tolerate that tradeoff.
- Confirm the final settings against the capabilities of your specific encoder and FFmpeg build before the scheduled stream.

- Upload data remains higher than expected: Check the configured outgoing bitrate and stream duration, then account for audio and protocol overhead. A lower video target or shorter stream reduces the planned volume.
- The picture breaks up after lowering bitrate: The target may be too low for the scene’s detail or movement. Test a higher target, a lower output resolution, or a lower frame rate where appropriate.
- The stream health is unstable: A connection may not sustain the chosen upload rate. Repeat a representative test, reduce the target bitrate, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health information rather than relying only on a speed-test result.
- FFmpeg rejects an option or behaves differently: Encoder options vary by codec, encoder, build, and hardware. Check the installed build’s supported options in FFmpeg documentation and choose settings it actually accepts.
