Substack launched a TV app. Here’s what it does—and why some users are unhappy

Substack TV is real, but it is not a Netflix-style service. Substack launched the app in beta on January 22, 2026, initially for physical Apple TV devices and Google TV. It lets free and paid subscribers watch eligible video posts and livestreams from publications they follow, with access determined by their existing subscription tier. The backlash is mainly about what the launch signals: a newsletter company moving deeper into video, recommendations and platform-controlled discovery.

What Substack TV actually is

Substack TV is a large-screen viewing layer for video already published on Substack. At launch, the app carried on-demand video posts and livestreams, including long-form interviews, readings and cultural programming. It was not a separate paid television subscription, a cable-style channel bundle or a complete replacement for YouTube.

Both free and paid subscribers can sign in, but their viewing rights remain tied to the publication subscription they already have. A free reader does not automatically gain access to a creator’s paid video.

The app includes a recommendation-oriented “For You” row, as well as content from publications a viewer follows. Substack’s support documentation says new videos from subscribed publications can appear in For You or under Subscriptions, but being published on Substack does not guarantee prominent placement or universal access.

As of August 18, 2026, the clearest description is a beta-era TV app for Apple TV and Google TV, with a broader television strategy still developing. Substack’s launch announcement and its support guide do not establish a full rollout to Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Samsung TV, LG TV or every smart-TV operating system.

How to install and sign in

Apple TV

  1. Open the App Store from the Apple TV home screen.
  2. Search for “Substack.”
  3. Download and open the app.
  4. Scan the displayed QR code with another device to sign in.

This requires physical Apple TV hardware. The Apple TV+ app built into many other televisions is not the same product and does not provide access to Substack’s app.

Google TV

  1. Open Apps or the search function on Google TV.
  2. Search for “Substack.”
  3. Download the app.
  4. Open it from the Apps section.

Substack’s instructions use the Google TV name and note that compatible Android TV devices may present different branding or sign-in screens. App availability is not identical on every Android-powered television.

What viewers can—and cannot—watch

  • Video posts from creators they follow.
  • Livestreams available under their subscription level.
  • Free content and paid content when the viewer’s account is entitled to it.

Three things should not be conflated: a creator publishing a video on Substack, a subscriber being allowed to watch it, and the video appearing in the recommendation feed. The TV app does not turn ordinary text newsletters into television programs, and it does not mean every paid show is openly previewable to free users.

What was still on the roadmap

Substack said it planned to add the following features; the launch announcement did not establish that they were all present in the initial beta:

  • Audio posts and read-alouds.
  • Improved search and discovery.
  • Previews of paid content for free subscribers.
  • In-app upgrades to paid subscriptions.
  • Dedicated sections for different shows from one publication.

That unfinished list helps explain why some people regarded the launch as a narrow first release rather than a complete television ecosystem.

Why some users and creators objected

Substack’s identity appears to be changing

For many readers, Substack meant newsletters, essays and direct email delivery. The TV app is another sign that the company also wants to be a video, livestreaming, recommendation and social platform. The objection is therefore about priorities and identity as much as software quality. Quartz’s analysis describes the strategic tension, while one creator’s criticism illustrates the more ideological response. Neither represents a poll of the entire Substack community.

Television favors polished, highly visible video

Email lets a small publication reach subscribers directly. A television interface asks viewers to browse thumbnails, follow recommendations and choose among competing programs. High-production video and recognizable names may therefore dominate the first screen, while text-first or smaller publications may have little reason to appear there. That is a plausible platform risk, not proof that Substack has already disadvantaged small writers.

Device coverage was limited

The documented launch covered Apple TV and Google TV. People using only Roku, Fire TV, Samsung or LG hardware could not assume access, and public discussion questioned the omission of other common television platforms. Substack has not established in the supplied sources that those platforms are permanently excluded.

The beta left practical questions unanswered

At launch, viewers could not assume that paid previews, television-based upgrades, show-level organization or audio support were available. Creators also received no identified TV-specific revenue share or guarantee of extra discovery. The product may add a useful screen without yet solving navigation, catalog organization or subscription conversion.

Is Substack TV a YouTube or Patreon competitor?

It overlaps with both, but it serves a different core relationship.

Service Primary relationship Discovery and television Monetization model
Substack TV Publication subscriptions, with email and creator video in one identity Video and livestreams for followed publications, plus a “For You” row; launch coverage documented Apple TV and Google TV Substack says publishing is free and takes 10% of paid transactions, with Stripe processing and recurring-billing charges separately
YouTube Open video discovery, search, advertising and livestreaming Broad catalog and mature television distribution Partner-program terms and eligibility vary; current terms should be checked in YouTube’s official creator documentation
Patreon Paid memberships and fan community Native video and livestreaming, but not the same publication-centered email workflow Patreon’s current standard plan for applicable newly published creator pages is 10% of income, plus processing, payout, currency-conversion fees and applicable taxes

Sources: Substack pricing, Patreon pricing and Patreon’s fee overview. TechCrunch framed the move in the context of competition with YouTube and Patreon, but Substack TV is not a realistic YouTube replacement for general entertainment and is not a conventional streaming bundle like Netflix or cable.

Who benefits from the app?

It makes sense for

  • Readers who already follow several Substack video creators.
  • Subscribers who want interviews, readings, commentary or livestreams on a television.
  • Creators with an existing paid audience and a body of video that can move to a larger screen.
  • Owners of supported Apple TV or Google TV hardware.

It is a poor fit for

  • People who mainly read text newsletters.
  • Anyone expecting YouTube-scale open discovery or a single catalog subscription.
  • Viewers who own only unsupported television hardware.
  • Creators whose work is primarily email-based and has no video component.
  • Users who dislike algorithmic recommendation feeds.

What the launch means for creators

The upside is mostly distribution and presentation. A creator’s existing video can have a more natural home for interviews, shows and livestreams, potentially making an existing subscription feel more like a durable media product. Substack said eligible existing video would be available to subscribers without a separate TV-specific setup.

The trade-off is greater dependence on Substack’s interface and recommendation decisions. Creators may feel pressure to produce television-friendly video, compete on visual polish and meet expectations set by professional streaming services. The available launch material does not show that the app increases revenue, guarantees discovery or provides a new payout formula.

Common misunderstandings

  • “I have Apple TV+.” That does not mean you have the Substack TV app; the documented requirement is physical Apple TV hardware.
  • “Every paid show should be previewable.” Paid-content previews were announced as a planned feature, not a universal launch entitlement.
  • “Following a publication guarantees its video will be featured.” Subscribed videos can appear in Subscriptions or For You, but recommendation placement is not guaranteed.
  • “The app creates a new TV subscription for creators.” No separate TV monetization arrangement was identified in the launch materials.
  • “Every smart TV is supported.” The verified launch documentation names Apple TV and Google TV only.

Bottom line

Substack TV is strategically significant but operationally modest. It puts creator video and livestreams on the living-room screen without yet proving that it improves discovery, paid conversion or sustainable creator income. Existing subscribers with supported hardware may find it useful; text-only readers, viewers seeking a broad streaming catalog and creators chasing open video discovery should look elsewhere—or use Substack alongside YouTube or Patreon rather than treating it as a replacement.
