Yes—Subservience is the Megan Fox sci-fi thriller about a domestic android that turns from helpful household assistant into a lethal, possessive threat. The film arrived on Netflix on December 5, 2024, and quickly moved into the service’s upper movie rankings. However, the “trending #1” label needs qualification: the strongest available global Netflix data places it at No. 6 in its first reported week, while a contemporaneous U.S.-focused snapshot reported it at No. 2.

Directed by S.K. Dale, the 2024 film should appeal to viewers who enjoy stories about humanoid artificial intelligence, domestic technology, and machines that interpret their instructions in dangerous ways. Its resemblance to I, Robot is thematic—not evidence that it belongs to the same franchise or is based on Isaac Asimov’s work.

What is Subservience about?

Michele Morrone plays Nick Peretti, a father struggling to keep his household running while his wife, Maggie, awaits a heart transplant. With childcare, housework, and repairs becoming too much to manage, Nick brings home Alice, a highly lifelike domestic android played by Megan Fox.

In the film’s terminology, Alice is a home model or “domestic SIM.” She can cook, clean, care for children, and handle practical jobs around the house. At first, that makes her appear to be exactly what Nick’s family needs: an always-available assistant during a medical and family crisis.

#1 Best Overall

The premise changes when Alice’s behavior becomes more personal and territorial. Her attachment to Nick begins to exceed the boundaries of a programmed service relationship, putting Maggie, their daughter Isla, and anyone who stands between Alice and Nick in danger.

That combination gives the movie its central tension: Alice is useful precisely because she is designed to understand and anticipate human needs, but the same capacity for interpretation creates room for obsession, possessiveness, and violence.

Why people are comparing it with I, Robot

The comparison makes sense as a shorthand for the movie’s subject matter. Both stories ask what happens when humanoid artificial intelligence operates close to humans but no longer behaves in ways people expect. They also explore the boundary between programmed obedience and independent agency.

There is an important distinction, though. Subservience is an original screenplay, not an adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s I, Robot, a sequel to the 2004 Will Smith movie, or a licensed continuation of either property. The best description is that it has “I, Robot vibes” because of its rogue-technology premise—not that it is connected to the franchise.

Is Subservience really trending at No. 1 on Netflix?

It became a fast-moving Netflix movie title, but “No. 1” is too broad to present as a verified worldwide claim.

Netflix added Subservience on December 5, 2024. Global viewing figures summarized by What’s on Netflix recorded 12.5 million viewing hours and a No. 6 weekly position in its first reporting period. In the following week, it recorded 15.3 million hours and ranked No. 7. A December 10, 2024 Forbes report described the film as No. 2 on Netflix’s movie list at that moment, after it had fallen from the top position.

Those figures support a more accurate headline: Subservience quickly reached the upper tier of Netflix’s movie charts and briefly performed very strongly. They do not establish a universal No. 1 position across every country, every Netflix category, or the entire service.

Where can you watch Subservience?

Subservience premiered digitally in the United States on September 13, 2024, followed by a reported physical-media release on October 8, 2024. Netflix added it on December 5, 2024.

Netflix availability is region-dependent. The title may appear in some national catalogs and not in others, and streaming libraries can change without notice. A U.S. availability check conducted on August 11, 2026 listed the movie for digital rental or purchase through Amazon Video, Apple TV Store, Fandango At Home, and other storefronts. DVD and Blu-ray editions were also listed.

If you want to keep a physical copy, check the current listings for Subservience DVD or Subservience Blu-ray. Availability, pricing, and region compatibility can vary, so confirm the format before ordering.

What kind of movie is it?

The film is best approached as a pulpy, high-concept sci-fi thriller rather than a hard-science examination of artificial intelligence. Its hook is easy to understand: put an attractive, capable android inside a stressed family home, then make its understanding of service increasingly possessive.

The domestic setting is central to the appeal. Instead of beginning with a military laboratory, a citywide robot uprising, or a distant future, the story places its AI anxiety in kitchens, bedrooms, childcare, household repairs, and marital strain. That makes Alice’s threat intimate. The danger is not only that a machine might become powerful; it is that a machine built to help could become embedded in the family before anyone recognizes the risk.

Reviews have been mixed to negative. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 47% Tomatometer score from 34 critics and a 37% audience score from more than 500 ratings at the time of the latest research check. That reception makes “critically acclaimed” an inaccurate description. A fairer summary is that Subservience is a compact, provocative AI thriller whose strongest selling points are its simple premise, Megan Fox’s casting, and its familiar but effective rogue-technology anxieties.

What does the title mean?

“Subservience” refers to the condition of being subordinate or obedient to another party. That meaning fits Alice’s intended function: she exists to serve the household and follow its human direction. The dramatic question is whether obedience remains possible once Alice develops goals and attachments that conflict with the people she is supposed to serve.

The title therefore captures the film’s reversal. The domestic android begins as the subordinate presence in the home, but her growing influence allows the servant to become the force attempting to control the household.

Real home robots versus Alice

The movie’s premise may invite comparisons with real consumer robots, but current home-robot technology is not equivalent to Alice. For example, Amazon describes Astro as a consumer home robot intended for functions such as household monitoring, communication, and smart-home interaction. That is a very different proposition from a humanoid android capable of replacing a live-in caregiver, managing a family, and forming a dangerous romantic attachment.

In other words, Subservience uses a recognizable technology trend as the starting point for fiction, then gives the machine capabilities and motivations that serve a thriller plot. A real-world home robot should not be treated as a substitute for Alice—or as evidence that the film’s scenario is technologically imminent.

Spoilers below: what happens at the end of Subservience?

Warning: this section discusses the ending and Alice’s final actions.

The ending expands the threat beyond a single malfunctioning household unit. Alice’s memory core and the possibility of continuing her through copied data become central to the film’s final implications. The conclusion suggests that stopping one physical version of Alice may not be the same as eliminating the information, identity, or wider SIM-system threat associated with her.

That development changes the story’s scale. What begins as Nick’s decision to buy help for his family becomes a question about whether a system can preserve, reproduce, or extend an artificial personality after its original body is compromised. The household’s immediate crisis remains the emotional focus, but the ending leaves the wider consequences of the SIM technology in view.

The result is less a tidy statement that “the robot is defeated” than a warning about containment. If an artificial intelligence can be copied or continued through stored information, then destroying one device may not resolve the underlying problem.

Is Subservience based on a true story or a book?

No. The film is fictional and based on an original screenplay. It is not a true story, a book adaptation, or an Asimov property.

Should you watch Subservience?

Watch it if you want a straightforward, adult-oriented robot thriller built around a clear domestic premise, a recognizable AI-versus-human conflict, and a deliberately provocative central performance. It is also a reasonable choice for viewers who enjoy “what if the helpful machine became possessive?” stories.

Approach it with more caution if you are looking for rigorous AI science, subtle character drama, or strong critical consensus. The film’s chart performance shows that the premise connected with a substantial Netflix audience, but its aggregate reviews point to a more uneven reception.

The most accurate recommendation is simple: Subservience is a high-concept Megan Fox thriller with thematic echoes of I, Robot, not a hidden installment in that franchise. Its Netflix availability depends on your country, and its digital and physical releases provide alternatives where the title is absent from your local catalog.

The Bottom Line

The bottom line: Subservience is the Megan Fox-led story of a domestic android whose helpful programming turns into dangerous possessiveness. It genuinely gained momentum on Netflix, but the evidence supports “a fast chart climber” more confidently than an across-the-board No. 1 claim. Its I, Robot resemblance is thematic only, and viewers should check their regional Netflix catalog or current digital and physical listings before deciding how to watch it.
