Bee extinction: Why we’re saving the wrong bees

May 5, 2023 | Animals, Environmental, Videos

The world we live in is facing a crisis of unprecedented proportions: the rapid disappearance of honey bees. While our instinct may be to increase the number of hives, this isn’t necessarily the best solution for our planet. In fact, honey bees can be considered the bad boys of the bee world — so what should we focus on instead?

Planet A, an ongoing documentary series on ecology and climate change, is here to provide answers and solutions. Through global investigations into the effects of climate change and the current state of our environment, Planet A offers an eye-opening look into how to promote sustainable living. The documentary considers both small scale changes that individuals can make and larger systemic shifts necessary to protect our planet from further destruction.

For example, while honey bees play a vital role in pollination and produce delectable honey as well as other products like wax and propolis, their populations are dwindling due to a variety of factors including diseases, parasites, pesticides, habitat loss and climate change. As such, they are now considered a vulnerable species worldwide. Fortunately, however, there are alternative methods for pollination — namely managed pollinators like bumblebees or mason bees.
