Yes—the original Subscene subtitle service is permanently offline. The closure was announced on May 2, 2024, with roughly 24 hours’ notice, and ArchiveTeam records the site’s disappearance on May 3 at approximately 21:11 UTC. Subscene has not returned as a functioning service; surviving archives and replacement websites only partially reproduce what the original community offered.
What was Subscene?
Subscene was a large, user-contributed subtitle database for films, television programs, and web series. Viewers could search for subtitle files in many languages, download formats such as .srt or .ass, and load them alongside video files in a media player.
It was not a streaming service. Its users generally already had a video and needed a subtitle matching a particular release, language, episode, or translation. Subscene was also used by subtitle translators, Kodi users, media-server operators, and third-party scripts that searched its database automatically. ArchiveTeam describes its role and preservation history.
When did Subscene close?
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| May 2, 2024 | The administrator’s closure announcement was preserved in the archived Subscene forum. |
| Within approximately 24 hours | The administrator said the site would close and that a takeover could not be arranged. |
| May 3, 2024 | ArchiveTeam records the original site disappearing at approximately 21:11 UTC. |
| May 5, 2024 | Several news reports covered the completed shutdown. |
The May 2 and May 3 dates are therefore not contradictory: May 2 was the announcement, while May 3 was the effective disappearance of the website.

What did the final goodbye message say?
The administrator’s message said that Subscene would close within the next 24 hours, that a takeover plan was not possible, and thanked the community for participating. The notice was abrupt and did not provide a detailed public explanation for the closure. The archived forum announcement remains available through the Internet Archive.
Why did Subscene shut down?
The confirmed facts are limited: the administrator announced the closure, said a takeover could not be arranged, and the service soon stopped operating.
Contemporary reporting, including TechWorm’s account, attributed the shutdown to financial pressure, declining traffic, and the cost of servers and maintenance. That explanation should be treated as reported context rather than a fully confirmed official cause. The preserved closure notice did not publish a detailed financial statement.
Rank #2
There is no reliable basis for claiming that a government, studio, or copyright organization directly forced the shutdown. There is also no confirmed evidence that Subscene was hacked, sold, or deliberately deleted by its owner.
Did the Subscene archive survive?
Only partially, and this distinction matters.
- The official site: Subscene.com is offline.
- ArchiveTeam: Its preservation record says the project was partially saved and that most subtitles were captured.
- Mirrors: SubDL claims to host a searchable mirror of Subscene’s archive.
- Other preservation efforts: Some contemporary forum discussion reported that Subscene material was uploaded or merged into OpenSubtitles, but this should not be treated as proof of a complete migration.
A saved subtitle file is not the same as a restored Subscene. User profiles, comments, ratings, uploader histories, translation teams, moderation records, search behavior, and obscure releases may be missing or altered. ArchiveTeam’s wording—partial preservation and most subtitles—is more accurate than saying that the entire database was backed up perfectly.
Is Subscene temporarily down?
No. The original Subscene service is permanently shut down. A domain that responds, redirects, displays a placeholder, or appears in an uptime checker is not proof that the original subtitle platform has returned. Websites using the Subscene name or logo should be treated as separate services unless their ownership and relationship to the original platform are clearly demonstrated.
Rank #3
Old search pages, uploader profiles, comments, and download links should generally be expected to fail. Internet Archive snapshots, community dumps, and mirrors may preserve parts of the experience, but availability varies by title, language, and release.
Best alternatives to Subscene
SubDL: the closest apparent replacement
SubDL presents itself as a searchable mirror of the Subscene archive and an active subtitle service. It says that users can search and download subtitles for free, access more than 100 languages, use a public API, and connect supported tools such as Bazarr and media-center plugins. It also advertises optional Pro features, including AI translation and higher API limits.

It may be the first place to look for a familiar old subtitle, but expect differences in metadata, moderation, language coverage, and missing files.

OpenSubtitles: broad catalog and integrations
OpenSubtitles is useful for broad subtitle searches and media-server workflows. It is not necessarily a one-for-one replacement for Subscene’s translator communities, browsing model, or exact archive. Some Subscene preservation claims connected to OpenSubtitles come from contemporary discussion rather than a verified complete migration.
Addic7ed: television-focused searches
Addic7ed is particularly relevant when looking for subtitles for television episodes, especially English-language releases. It may be less useful for films, uncommon languages, or obscure titles, so search by the specific program and episode rather than assuming universal coverage.
Multi-provider automation
Users with Plex, Jellyfin, Kodi, or local media libraries can use software that searches multiple subtitle providers instead of depending on one website. Bazarr is one example of an open-source automation tool. Automation can save time, but it does not restore Subscene or guarantee a correctly synchronized subtitle. Provider accounts, API credentials, language settings, and release matching may still be required.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to find a working replacement subtitle
- Search the exact film or episode title and include its release year.
- Match the subtitle to your video release—such as Blu-ray, WEB-DL, HDTV, or a particular release group.
- Check the language and whether you need SDH or hearing-impaired captions.
- Prefer a source that offers multiple versions when timing or translation quality matters.
- Load the file in your media player and test synchronization before renaming or automating it.
- If timing is wrong, try another release or adjust the subtitle delay.
Common text-based subtitle formats include .srt, .ass, and .vtt. Do not open an executable disguised as a subtitle. A file with an unexpected extension, a fake archive, aggressive redirects, browser notification prompts, or repeated fake download buttons is a warning sign. Clone domains using Subscene branding may not be official, safe, or authorized archives.
What to do if a Kodi, Plex, or media-server integration stopped working
Applications and add-ons that queried Subscene directly can no longer retrieve results because the underlying service does not respond. The usual recovery path is:
- Update the application, plug-in, or subtitle agent.
- Replace the dead Subscene provider with a supported provider such as SubDL, OpenSubtitles, or another source appropriate to your library.
- Reauthorize the provider or add an API key if the integration requires one.
- Recheck preferred languages, hearing-impaired settings, and download permissions.
- Remove the inactive Subscene provider if it causes repeated errors.
- Test the configuration manually with a known film or episode before enabling automatic downloads.
The exact menu path depends on the application and version, so there is no single universal configuration screen.
How to choose among the alternatives
| Need | Most relevant starting point | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Recovering an older Subscene-style listing | SubDL | Its archive and completeness claims are not independently verified. |
| Broad subtitle discovery and integrations | OpenSubtitles | It may not match Subscene’s organization or communities. |
| Television episodes | Addic7ed | Coverage may be weaker for films and less common languages. |
| Automated media-library downloads | Bazarr with supported providers | Requires technical setup and careful release matching. |
For any provider, evaluate title coverage, language availability, release matching, synchronization, version variety, account requirements, download limits, privacy, advertising, and legal status in your jurisdiction. A subtitle with the right title but the wrong frame rate, cut, or episode can still be unusable.
The final verdict
The original Subscene is gone. Its closure was announced on May 2, 2024, the site disappeared shortly afterward, and no evidence indicates that the original service has returned. Parts of its subtitle collection survive through archival projects, mirrors, and possible migrations, but no replacement should automatically be assumed to contain every file or recreate the original community. For most users, the practical solution is to search SubDL, OpenSubtitles, or Addic7ed according to the title type, then use a multi-provider tool if maintaining a larger media library.
Use lawful media, download subtitle files only from trusted sources, and treat every “new Subscene” domain as a separate service until proven otherwise.
