How to get the free books
During the event, the process was straightforward, but the price check was essential. Follow these steps whenever you find an archived event title or a similar current promotion:
- Open the Romance Bookworms event page or retailer-specific list. Browse the available romance categories and choose a title.
- Select a retailer. Choose Amazon Kindle, Nook, Kobo, Apple Books, or Google Play Books when that retailer is offered for the book.
- Check the live product page. Confirm that the ebook—not a paperback, audiobook, or another edition—is shown as $0.00 or otherwise clearly free in your country.
- Complete the retailer’s normal acquisition process. A free ebook may still require you to tap a purchase, obtain, or buy button and sign in to your retailer account.
- Check the correct library. A free Kindle book is added to your Amazon Kindle library. It is not merely a temporary Kindle Unlimited loan.
- Sync your reading app or device. If the title does not appear immediately, refresh or sync the library while signed in to the same account used to claim it.
Why you must verify the price
A promotion can end before an old list is updated. An author’s price change may also take time to propagate across retailers, and a title may be unavailable or priced differently in your country. Never rely solely on a “free books” label in an archived article or event list. Verify the final price on the retailer’s own product page immediately before completing the transaction.
If the page shows a paid price, stop rather than assuming the price will be corrected later. You can check another participating retailer, look for a different title, or return during a separately announced promotion.
Do you need a Kindle?
No. You did not need a dedicated Kindle e-reader to claim or read a Kindle edition. Kindle books can also be read with Amazon’s Kindle apps for iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows, and Mac, or in a web browser through Kindle Cloud Reader. Use the same Amazon account on the device or app as the one used to acquire the book.
Optional: a dedicated Kindle reader
A Kindle e-reader can make sense if you want a separate device for a large ebook library, but it is not needed for free-book promotions. A phone, tablet, computer, or browser can be enough. Choose dedicated hardware for the reading experience and convenience you want—not because “Stuff Your Kindle Day” requires it.
Why can’t you buy a Kindle book in the app?
Amazon generally does not allow Kindle books to be purchased directly inside the Kindle mobile app or the Amazon mobile app. On a phone or tablet, open Amazon in a web browser instead:
- Sign in to the Amazon account connected to your Kindle library.
- Search for the title and select the correct Kindle edition.
- Check that the displayed price is $0.00 or the expected current price.
- Complete the transaction in the browser.
- Open the Kindle app and sync or refresh the library.
The book should then appear in the Kindle app. If it does not, check that you used the same Amazon account, selected the Kindle edition rather than an audiobook or print edition, and refreshed the library.
Is a free Kindle book the same as Kindle Unlimited?
No. The September 2024 event promoted titles that readers could acquire at no cost through participating retailers. That is different from borrowing a title through a Kindle Unlimited subscription.
A book acquired during a free promotion becomes associated with the reader’s retailer account and can remain in that library under the retailer’s normal terms. Kindle Unlimited availability, by contrast, depends on the subscription catalog and the reader’s active access to that service.
