Neither Streamlabs Desktop nor OBS Studio has an established official advantage for keeping a YouTube stream running 24/7. Both can send a stream to YouTube, but the software name alone cannot guarantee continuity: results depend on your scenes, encoder settings, computer, network and monitoring plan. Choose based on how you want to build and manage the stream, then test the complete setup under real conditions.

Which is better for a 24/7 YouTube stream?

There is no official head-to-head test establishing that Streamlabs Desktop or OBS Studio is more reliable for an always-on stream. The official documentation reviewed does not promise uninterrupted operation or compare the applications under identical scenes, hardware, settings and network conditions. A claim that one is inherently better for uptime would go beyond the available evidence.

For documentary channels, the practical choice is usually about workflow. Streamlabs documents a guided path that includes onboarding, linking a channel, configuring video, adding overlays and testing before going live. OBS Studio is another option, but its system requirements caution that a compatible computer is not necessarily capable of streaming or recording: demands vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity.

What matters Streamlabs Desktop OBS Studio
Setup workflow Its quick start describes onboarding, channel linking, video setup, overlays and testing. YouTube is listed as a supported platform. Streamlabs quick start The sources reviewed do not establish a directly comparable guided workflow or setup time.
Computer requirements Streamlabs publishes minimum and recommended specifications, while noting that requirements vary with content, other programs and hardware. Its page lists 8 GB minimum RAM and recommends 16 GB or more; these are published recommendations, not universal 24/7 guarantees. Streamlabs system requirements OBS publishes basic OS and graphics requirements and says they do not guarantee streaming capability. Its page, dated August 25, 2021, identifies encoder, resolution, FPS and scene complexity as workload factors. Check current application and operating-system requirements before installing. OBS system requirements
24/7 reliability comparison No matched endurance or recovery comparison is established in the official sources reviewed. No matched endurance or recovery comparison is established in the official sources reviewed.

Use Streamlabs if its documented onboarding and overlay workflow suits you; use OBS if it fits your production workflow and you are comfortable configuring it. Neither choice removes the need to control load, validate the YouTube feed and plan for failure.

Can OBS or Streamlabs run 24/7?

Either can be used to send a YouTube stream, but that does not establish that either will stay live unattended indefinitely. A long-running stream depends on the entire chain: the application and computer must remain operational, the encoder must keep producing a compatible feed, the network must maintain sufficient upload capacity, and someone should be able to identify and respond to problems.

Streamlabs’ published recommendations include an Ethernet connection and a recommended SSD of 512 GB or more. Streamlabs also says actual requirements depend on content, concurrently running programs and hardware. OBS likewise warns that its baseline requirements do not guarantee streaming capability. Treat these as planning guidance, not a specification for guaranteed 24/7 service.

There is no documented official matched test here for resource use, unattended restart behavior or recovery after software or network failure. Do not assume one application is lighter or recovers better without testing your specific scene and machine.

Choose resolution, frame rate and bitrate for your content

Pick a resolution and frame rate your computer can encode consistently and your connection can upload with margin. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists these H.264 examples; the recommended bitrate is YouTube’s figure, not a guarantee that a particular connection will sustain it:

Output H.264 minimum bitrate H.264 recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

Use YouTube’s current encoder table for other resolutions, frame rates and codecs. YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR) with a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Prefer RTMPS where your software supports it. Match the output configuration in your encoder to YouTube’s current guidance rather than assuming a software default is right for every stream. Leave upload headroom

YouTube advises keeping the total streaming bitrate below available upload bandwidth and recommends about 20% headroom. That margin matters because other devices, background uploads and changes in network conditions can consume capacity. If a backup encoder is also sending a feed, account for the primary and backup bitrates as applicable. A speed test is a useful check, but one result does not establish that the connection will remain stable for a full day. YouTube: Live encoder settings · YouTube: Live streaming tips

Build and test the complete stream

  1. Prepare the scene. In your chosen application, assemble the documentary video source, audio, title or overlays and any other elements you need. Confirm playback and audio levels locally before connecting to YouTube.
  2. Connect to the YouTube stream. Create or select the event in YouTube Live Control Room and enter its stream key in the encoder. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or share it. Select RTMPS if available and configure the codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate and keyframe interval to match YouTube’s current settings guidance.
  3. Check the actual outbound connection. Run YouTube’s recommended upload speed test, compare available upload capacity with the total stream bitrate, and preserve the recommended headroom. Use Ethernet where practical; Streamlabs recommends it, but a wired cable by itself cannot guarantee continuity. Avoid saturating the connection with other users or uploads. A suitable Ethernet cable is a simple way to make a wired connection when the computer and router support one.
  4. Inspect YouTube’s preview and stream health. Start the encoder privately or as an unlisted test, then check the Live Control Room preview for picture, sound, overlays and motion. Verify that the event is accessible as intended before making it public. Follow YouTube’s event guidance: set up the encoder at least two hours ahead and start it at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event. These are event-planning recommendations, not a 24/7 reliability standard. YouTube: Live streaming tips
  5. Plan for interruptions. If downtime matters, test a backup encoder or failover process in advance. YouTube recommends testing backup encoder use, but that does not guarantee seamless recovery in every configuration. If you record locally, verify that the archive file is growing; YouTube also advises continuous monitoring of audio and video. YouTube: Live streaming tips · YouTube: Streaming tips
  6. Rehearse on the intended setup. Run a long-duration trial with the actual computer, scene collection, encoder settings and network you plan to use. Check for changes in stream health, audio, playback and local recording over time. Official guidance stresses workload variability, testing and monitoring but does not prescribe a particular rehearsal duration.

Copyright and documentary programming

Before streaming a documentary, confirm that you have the rights or permission needed for every video, music track, photograph and other included material. A public source or a clip found online is not automatically cleared for rebroadcast. YouTube’s live-stream eligibility guidance also makes channel restrictions relevant, so check the channel’s status before planning an event. YouTube: Get started with live streaming

Troubleshoot common 24/7 stream problems

Symptom What to check Practical response
YouTube does not receive a picture Stream key, selected event, encoder connection and whether the channel is eligible to stream. Confirm the encoder is pointed at the intended event and that the current key is entered correctly. Check channel verification and restrictions.
Stream health shows connection trouble Whether total bitrate exceeds reliable upload capacity, whether another device is using bandwidth and whether the connection is fluctuating. Run an upload speed test, reduce output bitrate or resolution if needed, preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom and use Ethernet if practical.
Video stutters or the computer struggles Encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, concurrent programs and hardware load. Reduce scene or encoding demands, close unnecessary programs, or choose a lower output setting that the system can sustain. Re-test the complete scene.
Picture works but audio or overlays are wrong Source selection, audio levels, scene visibility and the Live Control Room preview. Correct the scene in the encoder and verify the change in YouTube’s preview before relying on the public stream.
The stream drops during an unattended period Application state, computer power or sleep behavior, network availability and whether a tested backup path exists. Review the computer and network setup, then test the backup encoder or recovery procedure. The reviewed official materials do not establish that either desktop app will automatically restart or recover in every failure case.
