Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

You do not need a dedicated encoder or expensive equipment for a basic stream. Add a microphone, headphones, capture hardware, or extra cameras only when your content and workflow need them. Before choosing a resolution, check that your internet connection’s upload capacity can sustain the stream.
Choose the streaming setup that fits your content
YouTube supports mobile, webcam, and encoder-based livestreams. The right hardware depends on what you are filming and how much control you need over the production.
| Stream type | What you need | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Computer webcam | A computer and built-in or external webcam | Talking to viewers, presentations, and simple streams. Start with equipment you already have. |
| Mobile | A compatible phone or tablet | Vlogging and streams where portability matters. |
| Encoder-based | A computer or hardware encoder, a compatible video source, and any necessary capture path | Gameplay, external cameras, overlays, and more involved productions. |
YouTube says expensive equipment is not required to begin. Its YouTube live streaming tips cover getting started with what you have. For encoder-based workflows, YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains how to connect and configure a stream.
Essential equipment—and what is optional
Computer and camera
For a computer webcam stream, the computer and a working webcam are the core equipment. A built-in webcam can be enough to start; an external webcam is an optional upgrade if the built-in camera does not meet your needs. Mobile streaming is another route when you want to broadcast from a phone or tablet.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Microphone and headphones
Clear speech matters, but a separate microphone is not a universal requirement. YouTube lists an external microphone as common equipment for gaming and casual streams. Consider one if your current audio is unclear or picks up unwanted noise. Headphones help you monitor sound and avoid speaker audio feeding back into the microphone; they are useful, not mandatory.
Gameplay, external sources, and capture
When your stream includes a console or another external video source, you need a signal path that works with that source and your chosen computer or encoder. Check the source’s connections, the capture device’s inputs, and the encoder workflow before buying hardware. There is no single capture device that fits every console, camera, or production setup.

Multi-camera production
Multiple cameras and microphones, an audio mixer, and a hardware encoder can support a more complex production. They add setup, connections, and cost, so choose them to solve a specific production need rather than treating them as a beginner’s checklist.
Match your stream quality to your upload connection
The stream’s total bitrate must fit the available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload capacity unused and testing outbound bandwidth; download speed is often higher, and other people or devices sharing the network can reduce what is available to your stream. A wired Ethernet connection can be a reasonable reliability improvement when available, but it cannot increase the upstream limit of your internet plan. See YouTube’s streaming tips for its bandwidth guidance.

YouTube’s recommended video encoder bitrates include these examples. They are video bitrate figures, not the upload speed to target: your connection also needs the recommended headroom and capacity for the complete stream.
| Output | H.264 video bitrate | AV1/H.265 video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | Use YouTube’s full table for this codec and output combination. |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | Use YouTube’s full table for this codec and output combination. |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
These are the examples in YouTube’s recommended encoder settings and bitrate guidance; YouTube’s full table covers other resolutions and codecs. Treat the recommendation as a starting point, then test the output you plan to use against your actual upload capacity.

Encoder settings to check
If you use an encoder, confirm that it and your chosen workflow support the settings you intend to send. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds for the relevant workflow. Check YouTube’s encoder settings table for the complete resolution and codec guidance. The applicable options can depend on your encoder and stream configuration.
- Set the output resolution and frame rate to match what your source and connection can sustain.
- Choose the codec and bitrate together; the recommended bitrate differs by codec.
- Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval where the encoder workflow calls for YouTube’s recommended settings.
- Confirm the stream protocol and encoder compatibility before your event, not at the moment you go live.
Test the whole setup before a real stream
- Measure outbound capacity. Test upload bandwidth on the connection you will use. If it is shared, test under realistic conditions and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Configure the stream. In your encoder, select a supported protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval that your connection can handle.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Use representative movement and audio, rather than a static image or silence, so you can assess the actual content you plan to stream.
- Check Live Control Room. Review the preview and confirm that video and audio are arriving as expected.
- Watch stream health. Look for connection or delivery problems during the test and adjust the output or network conditions before going public.
- For a scheduled encoder event, start early. YouTube advises setting up the encoder in advance and starting it before the event.
Do you need HDR equipment?
Only if you intend to produce HDR. YouTube’s HDR workflow requires a compatible encoder and H.265/HEVC; its HLS workflow has additional configuration requirements and greater latency than RTMP. Most people starting a webcam, gaming, or standard-definition-to-4K stream do not need to buy HDR-specific gear. See YouTube’s HDR streaming guidance and HLS setup instructions before building an HDR workflow.

Common problems and what to check
- Stream buffers or drops frames: The selected bitrate may exceed available upload bandwidth, or other devices may be using the connection. Test outbound capacity, leave headroom, reduce the bitrate or output quality, and consider Ethernet if available.
- Video is missing from the preview: Check the camera or capture device connection, the selected source in the encoder, and the encoder’s connection to the event. Confirm that the source and capture path are compatible.
- Audio is absent or unclear: Check which microphone the encoder is using, its connection and input level, and whether the stream preview receives audio. Monitor with headphones during the test.
- Output quality is unstable: Verify that the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate are supported by both the encoder and your connection. Use YouTube’s settings table rather than assuming one bitrate fits every codec.
- HDR stream will not work as expected: Verify HEVC/H.265 support and the configuration required by your selected protocol; HLS has specific setup requirements.
