Straw is a 2025 Tyler Perry drama-thriller about a mother whose attempt to care for her ill daughter spirals into a bank standoff. Taraji P. Henson gives the film its strongest anchor; the escalating melodrama around her is forceful, but not always convincing. Whether that makes the film gripping or overextended will depend on how much heightened emotion you want from a thriller.
What is Straw about?
Janiyah, played by Henson, is a struggling single mother trying to look after her ill daughter as a run of crises closes in. The pressure eventually brings her to a bank standoff. Netflix’s synopsis describes a society that offers her “no safety net,” placing the story’s personal emergencies within a broader frame of economic and social precarity.
The premise is built around accumulation: one problem compounds the next until an already difficult day becomes catastrophic. Perry, who wrote and directed the film, told Netflix Tudum that Janiyah is “just trying to survive, just trying to be a great mother to her daughter, and then the circumstances in her life cause her to be in this situation.” That gives the story a clear emotional throughline, even as its events become increasingly heightened.
Does Taraji P. Henson make the film work?
Henson is the film’s center of gravity. She plays Janiyah as a person under mounting pressure, keeping the crisis tied to a mother’s urgent concern for her child rather than treating the bank standoff as spectacle alone. Her performance supplies the human focus the story needs as its circumstances grow more extreme.

That contrast between actor and material is also where the film’s main weakness emerges. The Guardian’s review praises Henson as rising above the thriller, while The Washington Post describes her performance as heroic but undisciplined. Those are individual critical responses, not a consensus; together, they point to a useful question for viewers: does Henson’s intensity make the film’s heightened construction feel emotionally immediate, or does the story ask her to carry more than its writing can support?
Is the escalating melodrama effective?
Straw wants the accumulation of setbacks to feel suffocating. Henson told Netflix Tudum, “Everything that can go wrong, goes wrong in this one day,” and described the film as exploring people operating under panic, anxiety, and pressure. The compressed premise gives the thriller a built-in source of momentum: Janiyah has little room to recover before the next crisis arrives.

The same design can strain plausibility. The film’s emotional force comes from watching pressure build, but the more insistently the story escalates, the more its credibility becomes part of the viewing experience. The social framing—especially the idea that Janiyah has no safety net—has urgency, yet it must compete with the sheer volume of dramatic turns. The result is best approached as heightened melodrama rather than a restrained, realistic account of hardship.

Is Straw worth watching?
Watch it for Henson’s committed central performance and a premise designed to keep tightening the screws. Be prepared for a film whose emotional ambition is more persuasive than the plausibility of every escalation. If you prefer thrillers that stay measured and tightly realistic, its deliberately heightened approach may frustrate you; if you are open to melodrama, the pressure-cooker structure gives Henson room to hold the screen.
