The film’s late revelation is narrower—and more devastating—than the theory that everything was imaginary. Janiyah’s daughter, Aria, died from a seizure the night before the story begins. Janiyah cannot accept the loss, so she continues to see and speak to Aria as if she is alive.
That explanation changes the meaning of several earlier scenes, but it does not erase the robbery, the shooting, the eviction, the bank standoff or Janiyah’s arrest. Straw separates Janiyah’s grief-driven hallucinations from the very real pressure that pushes her toward violence.
The central twist: Aria is already dead
For most of the film, Janiyah behaves like a desperate mother trying to protect her daughter through an impossibly bad day. She is dealing with money problems, work, housing trouble and escalating encounters with institutions while apparently trying to get back to Aria.
During the bank standoff, Janiyah’s mother, Delores, tells her what really happened: Aria died from a seizure the previous night. Janiyah’s mind has kept Aria present because accepting the death is unbearable.

This is why Aria appears in scenes where other characters do not respond to her. Janiyah is not simply withholding information from the audience; she is experiencing a version of events shaped by denial and grief. The film uses her point of view long enough to make the hallucination feel like ordinary reality.
Which scenes involving Aria were false?
The flashbacks after Delores’s revelation reframe the scenes connected to Aria. The apparent phone call from the school was actually from a bill collector. Janiyah’s memory of a confrontation involving the school and Child Protective Services also did not happen as she experienced it.
The principal’s confused reaction functions as an early clue. From Janiyah’s perspective, the school-related crisis seems urgent and concrete. From the outside, the people around her cannot confirm what she believes happened. The film is showing the gap between Janiyah’s internal reality and the observable world.
Aria’s science project also becomes important during the bank sequence. Janiyah sees it as part of her daughter’s presence and history. The bank staff, however, mistake it for a bomb, helping turn a desperate visit into a hostage situation.

What actually happened?
The revelation about Aria does not make the entire plot a hallucination. The surrounding chain of events remains real within the film’s story.
| Event | Status | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Aria’s death | Real | Delores says Aria died from a seizure the previous night. |
| Janiyah seeing and speaking to Aria | Hallucination | Janiyah’s grief prevents her from accepting that Aria is gone. |
| The school and CPS confrontation | Not real as Janiyah remembers it | The film links this false storyline to her distorted perception. |
| Janiyah’s car being stopped and impounded | Real | Her encounter with Officer Oliver genuinely worsens her situation. |
| Janiyah losing her job | Real | Her employer, Richard, fires her. |
| Her belongings being put outside | Real | Her landlord evicts her and leaves her possessions outside. |
| The grocery-store robbery | Real | The robbery takes place, and Janiyah shoots one of the robbers. |
| Richard’s shooting | Real | Janiyah later shoots Richard after he accuses her of involvement. |
| The bank standoff | Real | Janiyah brings the bloodstained paycheck to the bank, displays a gun and is treated as a threat. |
| The FBI shooting Janiyah | Hallucinated or imagined | It is Janiyah’s feared worst-case outcome, not what happens. |
| Janiyah’s surrender and arrest | Real | Nicole helps her leave peacefully, and Detective Raymond takes her into custody. |
Was Janiyah killed at the bank?
No. The sequence in which the FBI storms the bank and Janiyah is hit by multiple bullets is not the actual ending. It represents the future she imagines or fears as the standoff reaches its most dangerous point.
The real conclusion is quieter. Nicole remains with Janiyah and helps her come out of the bank peacefully. Detective Raymond arrests her. Janiyah survives, but survival is not a clean escape: she must now face the consequences of the shootings and hostage situation while also confronting Aria’s death.
Why does the film include the imagined massacre?
The false shooting sequence externalizes Janiyah’s terror. By that point, every system around her seems to have produced another punishment: her car is taken, her employment disappears, her housing collapses and the police response to the bank turns potentially lethal. She expects the final institution in the chain to kill her.

The scene also prevents the twist from functioning as a simple puzzle solution. The question is not only, “Which scenes happened?” It is also, “What does Janiyah believe is about to happen?” Her hallucinations are expressions of grief, fear and exhaustion rather than evidence that she has invented an entire world.
Is the protest crowd real?
The crowd outside the bank is deliberately less certain than the Aria material. The film presents people gathering in support of Janiyah, but it does not definitively identify the crowd as another hallucination.
That ambiguity matters. The movie leaves room for viewers to decide how much of the final public reaction belongs to the literal plot and how much reflects Janiyah’s emotional or political imagination. It is therefore inaccurate to state that the protest is confirmed to be imaginary. The safest reading is that the scene is intentionally open-ended.
What does the title Straw mean?
“The straw” is not one isolated incident. Janiyah reaches a breaking point after the pressures have accumulated beyond what she can carry: poverty, police mistreatment, insecure work, eviction, institutional indifference and the death of her child.

That structure explains why the film does not present Janiyah’s actions as being caused only by the bank or only by the grocery-store robbery. The standoff is the visible crisis, but it rests on a much longer sequence of losses. Aria’s death is the most painful burden of all, and Janiyah’s hallucinations show her attempting to keep functioning while refusing to acknowledge it.
The ending also connects Janiyah’s individual breakdown to the film’s broader interest in Black women recognizing one another across different social positions. Nicole, Delores and the other women around Janiyah are not interchangeable, but the crisis allows them to see how quickly ordinary vulnerability can become a life-threatening emergency.
Four misconceptions about the ending
- “The whole movie was a hallucination.” No. The hallucination is centered on Aria and the related school/CPS storyline. The robbery, shootings, bank standoff and arrest remain part of the real-world plot.
- “Janiyah dies in the bank.” No. The FBI attack is an imagined or hallucinated outcome. Janiyah survives and surrenders.
- “Aria died during the CPS incident.” No. Delores says Aria died from a seizure the previous night.
- “The protest crowd is definitely imaginary.” The film does not confirm that. The crowd is left deliberately ambiguous.
The ending in chronological order
- Aria dies from a seizure during the night.
- Janiyah continues through the next day as though Aria is alive, experiencing hallucinations connected to her daughter.
- Janiyah is subjected to a series of real-world crises, including the impounding of her car, losing her job and eviction.
- The grocery-store robbery occurs. Janiyah shoots one robber and later shoots Richard after he accuses her of participating in the crime.
- Janiyah takes the bloodstained paycheck to the bank. Aria’s science project contributes to the staff’s belief that she has a bomb.
- The standoff develops. Janiyah imagines the police storming the bank and killing her.
- That imagined outcome gives way to reality: Nicole helps Janiyah leave peacefully, and Detective Raymond arrests her.
- Janiyah is left alive to face both the criminal consequences of the day and the truth that Aria is gone.

Does Janiyah die at the end of Straw?
No. The scene showing her being shot by the FBI is an imagined worst-case outcome. In reality, she leaves the bank peacefully and is taken into custody.
What is ambiguous about the ending?
The protest crowd outside the bank is not definitively identified as real or imaginary. The film leaves that detail open to interpretation, unlike Aria’s death and Janiyah’s hallucinations.
The Bottom Line
Straw is not built around the idea that every event was imaginary. Aria is dead, and Janiyah’s continuing conversations with her are hallucinations rooted in grief. The financial, institutional and criminal crises around Janiyah are real, while the FBI massacre is an imagined outcome. She survives the standoff, surrenders and is arrested—left to face both the law and the reality she has spent the film avoiding.
