King Charles said he was “feeling a lot better now” when cancer survivor Lee Harman asked about his health during a royal engagement in Newmarket, England, on July 22, 2025. The comment followed the king’s brief hospitalization in March, when Buckingham Palace said he had experienced temporary side effects connected to his ongoing cancer treatment.

Charles’s remark was a personal response reported by Harman through the PA news agency, not a formal medical update from Buckingham Palace. The palace has not disclosed the king’s cancer type, treatment details, prognosis or remission status.

What King Charles said about his health

During the July 22 engagement, Harman—who has undergone cancer treatment himself—asked Charles how he was feeling. According to Harman, the king replied that he was “feeling a lot better now” and described his illness as “just one of those things.”

The exchange offered a positive indication of how Charles was feeling in that moment, but it did not establish that his cancer had gone into remission or that treatment had ended. It was also not delivered as a medical briefing, and no clinical information was attached to the comment.

Why Charles was hospitalized in March

On March 27, 2025, Buckingham Palace confirmed that Charles had spent a short period in hospital after experiencing what it called “temporary side effects” from scheduled and ongoing cancer treatment. He was kept under observation and returned to Clarence House.

The side effects were not identified publicly. The palace did not describe the episode as a major deterioration or emergency, but Charles canceled his engagements scheduled for March 28 as a precaution.

July 22, 2025 Charles told cancer survivor Lee Harman that he was “feeling a lot better now.”
December 12, 2025 Charles said his treatment schedule could be reduced in 2026, while continuing treatment.
May 11, 2026 He visited Guy’s Cancer Centre in London and met patients, clinicians and researchers. The visit did not include a new prognosis or diagnosis announcement.

What remains unknown

The palace has not publicly named Charles’s cancer. Its February 2024 statement specifically said the diagnosis was separate from his treatment for an enlarged prostate, but it did not identify the affected organ or type of cancer.

There has also been no official disclosure of:

  • the treatment Charles is receiving;
  • the stage or severity of the cancer;
  • the cause of the March side effects;
  • whether the cancer is in remission;
  • whether treatment has ended; or
  • the king’s long-term prognosis.

His return to public duties and his statement that he feels better should not be treated as evidence that he is cured. Public appearances can show that he is carrying out official work, but they cannot establish a medical outcome.

Later information about his treatment schedule

In December 2025, Charles recorded a message for Channel 4 and Cancer Research UK’s Stand Up To Cancer campaign. He said that early diagnosis, effective intervention and following medical advice had allowed his doctors to reduce his cancer-treatment schedule in 2026.

Buckingham Palace clarified that a reduced schedule did not mean treatment had stopped. The announcement therefore represented encouraging progress, but not confirmation that Charles was cancer-free.

Why the update matters

Charles’s brief exchange with Harman is significant because it is one of the clearest personal comments he has made about his condition. It also reflects the limited way the palace has chosen to discuss his health: confirming major developments while withholding private medical details.

For now, the verified picture is straightforward. Charles has an undisclosed cancer, experienced temporary treatment-related side effects that led to a short hospital observation period, later said he was feeling better, and continued receiving treatment. Nothing in the public record supports claims that the illness is prostate cancer, that he is cured, or that the March hospitalization represented a confirmed major decline.
