The official title of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3, Episode 5 is “Through the Lens of Time.” Its central threat reaches the Enterprise from an ancient, multidimensional prison on Vadia Nine—and takes hold of Ensign Dana Gamble.

What is the title of Season 3, Episode 5?

It is “Through the Lens of Time.” “A New Evil Threat Emerges on the Enterprise” describes the episode’s danger, but it is not the official episode title. StarTrek.com’s season list identifies it as Episode 5; Paramount+ also lists the installment as S3 E5.

What happens in “Through the Lens of Time”?

Spoilers follow.

The discovery on Vadia Nine

Nurse Christine Chapel and Dr. Roger Korby are pursuing research into human evolution and molecular memory when their work leads the Enterprise to Vadia Nine. The local M’Kroon overseers have declined Federation membership, so the landing party is kept small. A magnetic anomaly points to advanced technology beneath the planet’s surface. The Enterprise uses its deflector beams to reveal a vast structure hidden underground.

Inside, the team finds symbols connected to other artifacts and develops a theory about an ancient civilization seeking immortality through molecular quantum instability. The site is not merely a ruin: it spans layered dimensions, and its orbs hold entities imprisoned there. The crew identifies those beings as the Vezda.

The threat aboard the Enterprise

The structure disrupts communications and transport, and its hazards include traps, a light barrier and a lifeform-bearing statue called the Beholder. A glowing orb injures Ensign Gamble. He is transported to Sickbay with his eyes gone and short-term memory damaged; a Vezda then takes control of him aboard the ship.

The crew eventually separates the entity from Gamble and contains it in an orb, which they place in the transporter buffer. Gamble dies. In the closing moments, symbols from Vadia Nine briefly appear on the buffer display, suggesting that containment may not be secure.

What is the “evil” entity?

It is a Vezda, one of the entities held inside the dimensional prison beneath Vadia Nine. The episode’s danger has two fronts: the landing party faces the prison and its defenses, while the Vezda that reaches the ship possesses Gamble. The orb and transporter buffer become part of the crew’s attempt to contain it.

How does the episode balance science fiction and horror?

The mystery begins with archaeological and scientific questions—what the buried structure is, how its dimensions work and what its creators were trying to achieve. It shifts toward horror as the party encounters traps and imprisoned beings, and as the danger follows them back to the Enterprise through Gamble. Chapel and Korby’s research anchors the discovery, while the possession plot makes its consequences immediate for the ship’s crew.

The official StarTrek.com recap also points to relationship threads involving Chapel and Korby, and La’an and Spock, alongside the ensemble threat. The story therefore connects its speculative ideas to character relationships rather than treating the ruins as an isolated puzzle.

Who made the episode?

StarTrek.com’s recap credits Onitra Johnson and Davy Perez as writers and Andi Armaganian as director. The recap was published August 8, 2025.

When did it premiere, and how long is it?

The published listings carry different date signals.
