Kareena Kapoor said she has never performed a sex scene and does not see one as necessary to advance a story. In a conversation with Gillian Anderson for Dirty Magazine, as reported by Hindustan Times, she also said India is “still not as open” as the West about sexuality on screen. That comparison reflects Kapoor’s view, not a measured finding about either culture.

Why Kareena Kapoor says she has avoided sex scenes

Kapoor said she does not believe a sex scene is required simply to move a narrative forward. She also said she might not feel comfortable performing one on screen. Hindustan Times quoted her saying: “I personally feel like it’s not important to take a story forward. It’s not something that I feel is required in the narrative to show that. I know that I might not be comfortable doing that on screen.”

The report says Kapoor had never performed a sex scene in her career at the time of the conversation. That is the report’s account; it is not presented as the result of an independent review of her filmography. Her explanation was about both narrative choice and personal comfort, rather than a claim that such scenes should never appear in films.

What she meant by saying India is “still not as open”

Kapoor framed her comparison as a personal belief about how sexuality and sex scenes are treated on screen. Hindustan Times quoted her saying, “We have to start looking at and respecting that a lot more before we put it on screen. It’s my belief. Where I am coming from is the fact that we are still not as open as you are, having the narrative out there for you to experience so freely.”

She also said that female desire is openly addressed in the West. The report offers no audience research, regulatory comparison, or other comparative evidence to establish a general difference between India and Western countries. “The West” is Kapoor’s broad framing in this conversation, not a single defined film industry or a quantified comparison.

How Chameli fits into the conversation

The report connected Kapoor’s comments to Chameli (2003), in which she played a sex worker. Kapoor reportedly said the role helped her explore confidence and sensuality. Playing a character associated with sexuality, however, is distinct from performing a sex scene; the two should not be treated as interchangeable.
