When new axe murders occur after she returns to her family, suspicion falls on Lucy. The film’s final reveal is best left unspoiled.
What is Strait-Jacket about?
Lucy Harbin discovers her husband with another woman and kills them with an axe in front of her three-year-old daughter, Carol. Lucy is committed to an institution. Two decades later, she is released and returns to her family, where a new series of axe murders leads police to suspect that her violence has returned.
Sony’s official synopsis signals that the story’s truth is disclosed in the finale, so this overview avoids giving away that reveal. The setup places the film’s suspense in the gap between Lucy’s violent past, her return to family life, and the new crimes.
Who made the film, and when was it released?
William Castle directed and produced the film, with a screenplay by Robert Bloch. Joan Crawford stars as Lucy Harbin, alongside Diane Baker and Leif Erickson. The American Film Institute catalogs the 89-minute film as a mystery and melodrama; Sony describes it as horror and suspense. “Horror-thriller” is a useful broad description rather than a claim that the film fits only one genre.
