Why Buscemi as George makes an appealing what-if
George is not simply a role waiting for any comic actor to fill it. David said the character was based on him to some extent in the early seasons, making the casting question a comparison between Alexander’s performance and a character rooted in David’s comic sensibility.
Alexander’s George is tightly wound and physically expressive, turning grievances and small humiliations into elaborate crises. Buscemi’s screen persona could invite a different version: more offbeat, more visibly anxious, or more deadpan. Those are possibilities, not evidence of how he would have played George. The casting record does not show what Buscemi’s interpretation would have been, or how it would have worked opposite Jerry Seinfeld.

That uncertainty is exactly what makes the premise fun. The claim is not that Buscemi would certainly have been better, or that the show made a demonstrable mistake. It is that imagining his particular comic presence inside George’s role offers a vivid alternate version of a familiar sitcom.
