søn of dad makes a convincing case for hearing Stephen Wilson Jr. as a country songwriter working with indie-rock and grunge textures—not as an artist who has left country behind. Released in 2023, the 22-song double album is dedicated to his late father. Its blend of country instrumentation, rock energy and intimate family memory gives the phrase “country music sounding indie” a specific meaning, without claiming that one record transformed the genre.
Is søn of dad country, indie rock, or both?
Both descriptions illuminate different parts of the record. Big Loud’s announcement says Wilson draws on country, indie rock and grunge, and calls his sound “Death Cab For Country.” That phrase is the label’s shorthand, not a formal genre classification or a quote attributed directly to Wilson. In a 2024 interview with MusicRadar, Wilson put his own emphasis on the writing: “There seems to be a lot of discussion over whether I’m a country artist, or a country singer, but what I will say is that I’m a country songwriter.”
That distinction helps explain the album’s cross-genre character. The country element is not merely a costume or an instrumental reference; it is part of the songwriting identity Wilson claims. Indie rock and grunge, meanwhile, help describe the music’s broader rock vocabulary. Holler’s review hears grunge and energetic rock alongside country instrumentation. Those are critical listening terms, not an official taxonomy.
How does the album bring country and indie-rock ideas together?
Country songwriting, rock-weighted textures
The most useful way to hear the blend is to separate songwriting from surface sound. Wilson identifies himself as a country songwriter, while the label explicitly places indie rock and grunge among his influences. Holler’s description of country instrumentation meeting energetic rock points to the arrangement as a place where those strands converge: familiar country signifiers can sit within a louder, rougher rock frame.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That combination is what makes “country music sound indie” a fair critical reading of søn of dad. It describes a particular tension in the record—country writing and instrumentation shaped by an indie-rock and grunge sensibility—rather than proving that the album changed country music as a whole.
Guitar ideas in service of a story
Wilson’s guitar work offers a concrete example of how a rock-like idea can support country storytelling. In a 2026 Premier Guitar interview, he discussed “Gary,” including his search for a distinctive guitar figure and the song’s connection to his father’s body shop. The detail matters because the guitar concept and the family reference belong to the same creative world: an instrumental idea can give a personal story its own shape, rather than serving as a genre badge on its own.

Why is the album dedicated to Wilson’s father?
søn of dad is a 22-song double album dedicated to Wilson’s late father, according to Big Loud’s 2023 announcement. Grief and family memory are not side notes to the genre conversation. Holler identifies the songs about Wilson’s father and the record’s grief as a central thread, giving the album’s stylistic mix an emotional center.
That focus also makes the country connection more than an argument about instruments. The record’s family subject matter gives its songwriting a personal, narrative frame, while the rock and grunge textures affect how that material lands. The result is a blend of storytelling and sound, not simply a set of genre markers.

What does Wilson’s background add to the sound?
Wilson’s biography helps explain why indie rock is part of the context, but it should not stand in for listening to the album. His official biography traces a path from southern Indiana to Nashville, notes that he worked as a scientist, and describes his lead-guitar experience in indie-rock band AutoVaughn before his songwriting work and 2023 signing with Big Loud. That history makes the cross-genre vocabulary understandable; the album’s actual sound and themes are what make the case musically.

The phrase is most persuasive as a description of this album’s balance: Wilson’s stated identity as a country songwriter alongside the label’s account of indie-rock and grunge influences, with a review describing country instrumentation and energetic rock. It is not evidence of a definitive new genre, a direct comparison to one specific artist, or a measurable shift in country music’s direction. The available sources establish the album’s influences, framing and themes, but do not establish a broader causal impact.
