On the night of Donald Trump’s January 20, 2025 inauguration, Stephen Colbert opened The Late Show with a joke about coping with the next four years: “For the next four years we get to live by airport rules. Calories don’t count and it’s perfectly reasonable to have a vodka tonic at 8am.” The monologue then moved through inauguration-day moments before ending on a sharp reversal about Trump’s past conduct.
What Colbert meant by “airport rules”
The phrase is a comic shorthand for relaxing ordinary conventions while traveling: eating or drinking at unusual times, as if the airport were outside normal routine. Colbert applied that idea to the political prospect of another Trump presidency. The calories and 8 a.m. vodka tonic are examples in the joke, not literal advice or a claim about travel rules. Contemporary coverage reported the line and its framing; describing it as political coping is an interpretation of the joke. Mashable’s report, published by Yahoo Entertainment, and The Boston Globe’s roundup both noted the “airport rules” premise.
How the monologue covered inauguration day
Colbert joked about the ceremony being moved indoors, Trump’s oath and speech, and the first lady’s wide-brimmed outfit. His recap also touched on Trump’s “Gulf of America” language and promise to pursue Mars. LateNighter’s account describes the monologue in two parts: the inauguration material and a later section on Joe Biden’s pardons, TikTok, and Trump’s cryptocurrency. These reports provide selected lines and an outline, rather than a complete authoritative transcript.
Why the ending reverses the fresh-start idea
In the closing passage quoted by Mashable, Colbert briefly suggests looking at the president with fresh eyes, then undercuts that thought by invoking Trump’s past “inject bleach” remark and the “pee pee tape” claim. The shift is the punchline: it rejects the suggestion that a new administration erases what came before. The reference to the tape is part of the satire, not evidence that such a tape exists.

What is established about the segment
The monologue aired on inauguration day, January 20, 2025, as part of The Late Show. The available coverage supports its opening joke, several subjects it addressed, and the broad outline of its later section. It does not establish every line or provide a full transcript, so exact wording beyond the passages quoted in those accounts should be treated cautiously.
