In remarks reported after the program’s Emmy win, Colbert drew a distinction between a television show ending and government punishment for speech: “Free speech is alive and well,” he said, adding that being jailed for saying something would violate free-speech rights. CBS said the cancellation was a financial decision. The timing and Trump’s public reaction fueled suspicions about political influence, but the cited reports do not establish that Trump or his administration privately pressured CBS or caused the decision.
What Colbert said about free speech
In an October 6, 2026 report, CinemaBlend’s Ryan LaBee quoted Colbert speaking after The Late Show won an Emmy. Colbert said, “Free speech is alive and well,” then explained: “Because if you can’t say something because you go to jail, that is a violation of free speech.”
He also said that late night remained “just as funny and just as vital as it ever has been,” praised other late-night hosts, and expressed hope that the format would continue. His comments address free speech and the value of late-night television; they are not a claim that he knows why CBS canceled his program.
What happened before CBS announced the cancellation
The sequence matters because Colbert’s criticism came shortly before the network’s announcement. The Associated Press reported the following chronology:
#1 Best Overall
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| July 14, 2025 | Colbert criticized Paramount’s $16 million settlement with Donald Trump, calling it a “big fat bribe” in his monologue, according to the AP. The settlement concerned Trump’s lawsuit over CBS’s editing of a 60 Minutes interview with then-presidential candidate Kamala Harris. |
| July 17, 2025 | CBS announced that The Late Show would end in May 2026, at the conclusion of the 2025–26 broadcast season. The AP reported that Colbert said he learned of the decision the previous night. |
| After the announcement | Trump publicly celebrated the cancellation and called Colbert “fired,” according to the AP. The network’s announcement came three days after Colbert’s criticism of the settlement. |
The timing prompted two U.S. senators to publicly question the decision’s motives, the AP reported. Trump’s celebration is evidence of his public reaction, not proof that he caused the cancellation.
What CBS said—and what the reports establish
CBS described the cancellation as “purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night.” Its statement said the decision was not related to the show’s performance or content, or to other matters at Paramount. That is the network’s stated explanation, not an independently established finding about its private decision-making.
Rank #2
The available reporting establishes that CBS announced the end of the show, gave a financial rationale, and did so shortly after Colbert’s criticism of the settlement. It also establishes that Trump publicly welcomed the cancellation. The reports cited here do not provide direct evidence either proving or disproving whether Trump, his administration, or another political actor privately pressured CBS. The timing can explain why people raised the question, but it does not by itself establish causation.

Colbert’s point was about the difference between a program being canceled and a person being legally punished for speaking. His comments do not resolve the separate question of what motivated CBS. Likewise, CBS’s financial explanation should be presented as the network’s account, rather than as proof that political pressure played no role. The evidence supports a clear distinction: the cancellation and the surrounding chronology are reported facts; the claim of private political intervention remains unestablished in the cited record.
