Stephen Colbert welcomed Jimmy Kimmel’s return on September 22, 2025, then joked that Kimmel’s comeback had ended his own brief competition for late-night martyrdom. Disney had announced that Jimmy Kimmel Live! would return the next night, September 23, after being preempted the week before.
What Colbert said about Kimmel’s return
In his September 22 Late Show monologue, Colbert called the news “wonderful” for his friend and Kimmel’s staff, adding: “They get to do their show.” He also celebrated his own recent Emmy and turned the moment into an affectionate joke about late-night hosts competing over adversity.

“Once more, I am the only martyr in late night,” Colbert said in his closing line. He also joked that the “late nightmare” was over. The remarks were comic and supportive, not a sustained criticism of Kimmel or a detailed assessment of the controversy.
Why Kimmel’s show had been suspended
The sequence began with Kimmel’s September 15 monologue about the killing of Charlie Kirk. The following week, Disney preempted Jimmy Kimmel Live! indefinitely. In announcing the show’s return on September 22, Disney said the suspension had been intended “to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country.” The company also described some of Kimmel’s comments as “ill-timed and thus insensitive” and said it decided on the return after conversations with him. Those are Disney’s stated explanations for its decisions.

What Kimmel said when he returned
Kimmel returned to ABC on September 23 and addressed the suspension in his opening monologue. CBS News quoted him saying that he had never intended “to make light of the murder of a young man” and that he did not think “there’s anything funny about it.” He also acknowledged that some viewers found his remarks ill-timed, unclear, or offensive. The report said he did not issue a blanket apology.

Colbert’s September 22 remarks came on the day Disney announced Kimmel’s return; they are distinct from later coverage of the hosts appearing on each other’s programs. A CBS Mornings listing dated October 1 covered that later crossover, but the listing alone does not establish where the specific segments or full episodes can currently be streamed.
