Stephen and Tabitha King met while working as students at the University of Maine’s Fogler Library and married in January 1971, according to Stephen King’s official biography. Their public story includes lean early years, a growing writing career, family life and two authors with distinct bodies of work. The documented milestones show a long partnership; they do not reveal the private texture of the marriage or support a claim that either spouse alone made the other’s career.
How Stephen and Tabitha King met
Stephen King’s official biography says he met Tabitha Spruce in the stacks of Fogler Library at the University of Maine at Orono, where both were student employees. Biography.com dates the meeting to 1969, but the official biography confirms the place rather than the year. Biography.com’s account is therefore the source for that specific date.
When did they marry?
The official biography dates their wedding to January 1971. An older Library of Congress speaker biography says they had been married since 1972, creating a conflict in the public record. The official biography gives the more specific date and is the best basis for the timeline; the discrepancy is worth noting rather than silently blending the two accounts.
Building a household while Stephen pursued writing
Their early married life was financially modest. Stephen worked at an industrial laundry, while Tabitha’s student-loan funds and savings helped support the household. He also earned occasional money from short-story sales. In fall 1971, he began teaching high-school English while continuing to write, according to the official biography.

Carrie and the family’s moves
Doubleday accepted Carrie in spring 1973. A major paperback sale later gave Stephen the means to leave teaching and write full-time. The family moved to Colorado in fall 1974 and returned to Maine in summer 1975. These career and household milestones are part of the official chronology; they describe changing circumstances, not a complete account of how the couple privately navigated them.
Tabitha King’s work as a novelist
Tabitha King is an author in her own right, not simply a figure in Stephen King’s biography. The Library of Congress authority page identifies her as a novelist and lists Candles Burning and seven other novels. The Library of Congress also records a joint family event in its biographical material, while the Kings’ official site lists a 2015 joint interview in Maine Seniors. That listing confirms the interview’s appearance but does not provide its transcript, so it cannot establish particular comments by either spouse. The official interview listing is a useful starting point for readers seeking their public perspective.
What public accounts say about the 1999 accident
Biography.com reports that Tabitha helped Stephen resume writing after he was struck by a van in 1999. That is a secondary account of a difficult episode; it should not be stretched into a sweeping explanation of their relationship or his career. In a separate public statement, Stephen said of Tabitha, “Tabby always knew what I was supposed to be doing, and she believed that I would succeed at it.” Biography.com reproduces the line from his 2003 National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters acceptance speech. The profile provides the quotation; it is Stephen’s public description of her support, not a substitute for the couple’s private story.

The available biographies establish a meeting at the university library, a wedding date, early financial realities, career changes and shared family context. They also show Tabitha’s independent literary work. They do not establish what the marriage felt like day to day, and they do not prove a simple story in which one spouse alone caused the other’s success. The most careful account treats their decades together as a documented public history, while leaving private experience where the public record leaves it.
