In October 2024, Steins;Gate producer Tatsuya Matsubara said the visual novel was coming to Crunchyroll Game Vault, describing the release as a chance for a new audience to experience the game. That was an announcement about an upcoming release at the time—not confirmation that the game is available on the service today.
What Matsubara announced about Crunchyroll Game Vault
In an interview marking the visual novel’s 15th anniversary, Matsubara discussed Steins;Gate coming to Crunchyroll Game Vault. The announcement was reported by Crunchyroll News on October 27, 2024 and by CBR on October 29, 2024.
Matsubara presented the arrival as a way for people who had not played the game to experience it. The interview described the release as coming in the immediate future, but those October 2024 reports do not establish whether it is currently in the Game Vault catalog, which countries it serves, or what subscription tier or devices would be required. Check Crunchyroll’s current catalog and service details before subscribing specifically to play it.
What is the Steins;Gate visual novel?
Steins;Gate is a visual novel in the Science Adventure franchise. Matsubara is identified in the Crunchyroll interview as a producer of MAGES.’ Science Adventure visual novels. The original game debuted in Japan for Xbox 360 on October 15, 2009, and later appeared on additional platforms, including PC, according to Crunchyroll News.

A visual novel tells its story through written scenes and character interactions, with choices that can lead through different branches. That structure was part of the anniversary discussion: adapting a branching game into a linear anime meant finding a way to preserve the story’s core in a different form. The interview coverage does not provide a verified, detailed account of specific changes between the game and anime, so claims about particular cuts or altered scenes should not be inferred from that broad point.
What Matsubara said about a sequel
The same 2024 coverage reported that concepts for a sequel were being assembled and that Matsubara expected to turn the concept into a game scenario. This describes what he said at the time of the anniversary interviews; it does not confirm the project’s current development stage, release date, or final form.
