Yes. In June 2002, Steve Austin surrendered in Texas after a warrant charged him with misdemeanor assault causing bodily injury to his wife, Debra Williams, professionally known as Debra Marshall. Austin later pleaded no contest. An Associated Press report said he received probation, a fine, domestic-violence counseling and community service.

What happened at the couple’s San Antonio home?

Police were called to the couple’s San Antonio home on June 15, 2002. Contemporary reporting on the police account said Debra Williams told officers that Austin had hit her several times after an argument. The report said officers found her crying and that a responding officer observed a welt below her right eye. These details are allegations and observations attributed to police reporting, not an independent account of the incident. The Smoking Gun’s account of the police report and CBS News’ contemporaneous report described the call and the officer’s observation.

Why was Steve Austin arrested?

An arrest warrant charged Austin with assault causing bodily injury on a spouse. CBS News reported on June 17, 2002, that Austin surrendered to authorities and posted $5,000 bond. The charge was a misdemeanor, according to later contemporaneous coverage. CBS News reported on the surrender and warrant; Deseret News later reported that he faced a misdemeanor charge stemming from the June 15 disturbance.

After surrendering, Austin was quoted by CBS News as saying, “Nothing happened.” That was his attributed response at the time, not a court finding about the allegation.

Who was Debra Williams?

Debra Williams, known professionally as Debra Marshall, was Austin’s wife at the time of the incident. In September 2002, while the charge was pending, Austin told Deseret News, “We’re doing great, as a matter of fact,” when asked about his reconciliation with Debra. The comment describes what he said about their relationship then; it does not resolve the allegation or the criminal case.

How did the case end?

An Associated Press report published by MyPlainview said Austin pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor assault charge on November 24, 2002. The report said he was sentenced to a year of probation, a $1,000 fine, domestic-violence counseling and 80 hours of community service. Prosecutor Scott Simpson characterized the plea as taking responsibility, saying, “He took responsibility for what he did.” That is the prosecutor’s description of the plea, not a quotation from Austin.

The AP report also said the conviction would be removed from Austin’s record if he satisfactorily completed probation. The sources cited here do not establish whether that condition was met or confirm the later status of his record. The Associated Press report republished by MyPlainview gives the plea and reported sentence.
