Spoilers for the series finale. In “One Last Time,” the Station 19 crew helps stop a wildfire threatening Seattle. Andy survives serious injuries, but Kate dies in the fire tornado. The finale’s glimpses of possible futures are not all literal promises; its closing time jump is more definite, showing Andy as Seattle fire chief, Maya back as Station 19’s captain, and Pru as a young firefighter at the station.

What happens in the Station 19 finale?

The May 30, 2024 finale, “One Last Time” (Season 7, Episode 10), picks up with Maya trapped behind a wall of fire after she and Andy were separated while searching for someone lost in the woods. A water drop saves Maya from immediate danger, but the wildfire continues to spread. The crew faces a fire tornado as the situation becomes more dangerous. Shondaland’s official recap recounts the rescue and the episode’s final crisis.

The firefighters use fire shelters to endure the blaze. Andy leaves shelter to warn another station, whose truck and hoses help contain the fire. The central rescue succeeds, but Andy is taken for treatment with burns, smoke inhalation, and dehydration. She later wakes with her team beside her.

Who dies, and does Andy survive?

Andy survives and recovers. Kate is the finale’s fatality: she dies in the fire tornado. The core team survives the rescue, though Andy’s injuries make clear that survival is not the same as escaping the fire unharmed.

Are the future scenes real or imagined?

The episode moves between the immediate danger and visions of possible futures. Those scenes show what characters hope for or imagine while facing the fire; they are not a complete, confirmed account of every character’s life afterward. The last time jump, by contrast, gives a concrete closing snapshot of the future. Co-showrunner Zoanne Clack described her aim as showing characters later in life without resolving everything: “I really honed into wanting to see the characters in the future, but I didn’t want to have it all in the end.” (TheWrap, May 30, 2024.)

Where the main characters end up

Andy and Jack

In the decades-later scene, Andy is Seattle fire chief, reaching the leadership role she had long pursued. The ending also recalls the pilot and places Jack in her imagined future. It leaves their relationship open rather than confirming that they marry or become a conventional couple. Co-showrunner Peter Paige put the ambiguity plainly: “Whether they become a conventional couple I don’t know. But are they deeply connected? 100%.” (TheWrap, May 30, 2024.)

Maya and Carina

Carina tells Maya she is pregnant. During the fire, Maya imagines Carina giving birth to their second child and herself carrying a third. Those images are part of Maya’s vision, not a definitive confirmation that she later gives birth. The closing time jump does establish that Maya is once again captain of Station 19.

Pru and Ben

Pru—Dean’s daughter, adopted by Ben and Bailey—appears as a young firefighter at Station 19 in the final time jump, suggesting the station’s work will pass to a new generation. Ben tells Andy he plans to leave the firehouse and return to surgery. Clack said the writers left open whether he might return to Grey’s Anatomy; that decision belonged to that series.

Vic, Travis, and Theo

Vic takes Crisis One to Washington, D.C., to expand the initiative. Travis initially says he cannot leave Seattle, but ultimately goes with her. Theo survives; his vision offers a hopeful possibility involving professional success, family, and a return to the firehouse.

Ross and Sullivan

Their future material suggests a wedding and a public-facing political role for Ross. Because these moments belong to the finale’s vision structure, they are suggestive glimpses rather than a detailed, fully narrated resolution.

What the ending means

The finale gives viewers closure without treating every imagined future as settled fact. The visions reveal what the characters value and what gives them hope under extreme pressure; the final time jump supplies a firmer answer about the station’s future. Andy becomes chief, Maya leads 19 again, and Pru steps into the work.

That ending also brings Andy and Maya’s shared professional journey full circle. Their futures differ, but both remain tied to the firehouse and the people who shaped them. Paige described the show’s legacy as something viewers can carry into their communities, relationships, and friendships (TV Guide).

The wildfire had been planned as the season’s climax before the series was cancelled. The cancellation led the writers to reshape the ending to provide closure rather than leave a string of cliffhangers. Shondaland’s behind-the-scenes feature notes that the finale closed the seven-season series.
