K. G. George’s Malayalam film Irakal (commonly dated 1985) follows Baby, an engineering student whose violence begins at college and returns with him to his family’s rubber plantation. Rather than treat “psycho” as a clinical diagnosis, the film’s sharper subject is a household where political influence, business power and compromised morals help shape the world around him.
What is Irakal about?
The Directorate of Film Festivals’ synopsis introduces Baby as a young engineering student who nearly kills a junior after a confrontation over ragging at his residential college. He returns to his family’s plantation, claiming that the college is on strike. The story then shifts from campus conflict to an inharmonious household whose members wield political clout.
Baby’s violence is not presented in isolation from that setting. His father is a ruthless businessman, and the catalogue describes the family’s conduct through the phrase “rubber morality.” The Encyclopedia of Indian Cinema likewise frames Baby as a strangler who uses nylon wire and the father as a ruthless rubber baron. These are descriptions of the film’s dramatic characters, not a clinical diagnosis.
Why does the family setting matter?
The move from college to plantation changes the scale of the conflict. Baby’s first reported attack grows out of a confrontation with a junior; at home, the film places him among relatives whose wealth and political influence shape the family’s moral climate. The plantation is therefore more than a backdrop: it locates personal violence within an established structure of power and self-interest.

That connection makes “a study of a psycho” an incomplete description. The film’s framing draws attention not only to Baby, but also to the household that surrounds him and the standards it lives by.
