The new Stargate series announced for Prime Video in November 2025 is no longer moving forward. On June 3, 2026, Space.com reported that producer Joe Mallozzi confirmed Amazon had elected not to proceed with the project. That decision applies to this series; it does not establish that Amazon has ruled out every future Stargate project.
What happened to the Prime Video Stargate series?
Amazon MGM Studios announced the original series on November 19, 2025, with Martin Gero—who had worked on Stargate: Atlantis—as writer and showrunner. The studio said production details and casting would come later; no cast had been announced when the project was greenlit.

In June 2026, Mallozzi, a consulting producer, confirmed the cancellation to Space.com: “Sadly, it’s true. Amazon has elected not to move forward with the new Stargate series.” This is a report quoting the producer, not an Amazon cancellation press release. Amazon’s announcement page still describes the series as in the works, but that page appears not to reflect the later report.
The original announcement named Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures, Dean Devlin, and Roland Emmerich as executive producers, with Brad Wright and Mallozzi as consulting producers. Gero’s message to longtime fans, quoted by Amazon Staff, was: “For those who’ve kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith—this one’s for you.”

Why was the series canceled?
No confirmed formal reason has been established. Space.com reported that a Variety source said executives were concerned about the show’s broad appeal; Mallozzi publicly disputed that account. That explanation is therefore attributed reporting, not a confirmed account of Amazon’s decision.
Space.com also reported that Amazon remained interested in exploring Stargate. Interest is not a new greenlight, and it does not mean another series is in production.

What is Stargate about?
The franchise began with the 1994 film Stargate. Its central device is an alien gate that creates a wormhole between planets, allowing human teams to travel to other worlds. Amazon describes the franchise as blending military action, mythology, and science-fiction ideas. The screen universe grew to include several series and two follow-up films.
Which Stargate shows and films can you catch up on?
| Title | Format and run | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Stargate | Feature film (1994) | The film that began the franchise. |
| Stargate SG-1 | 10 seasons (1997–2007); 214 episodes, according to Space.com | The long-running series that established much of the television universe. |
| Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum | Two direct-to-video films (2008) | Follow-up films associated with SG-1. |
| Stargate Atlantis | Five seasons (2004–2009) | A spin-off in the television franchise. |
| Stargate Universe | Two seasons (2009–2011) | A later series in the screen universe. |
| Stargate Origins | Prequel web series | Set in 1939, before the events of the original film. |
| Stargate Infinity | Animated series | Another screen entry listed in Amazon’s franchise overview. |
What should you watch first?
For a straightforward start, watch the 1994 film, then begin Stargate SG-1. The film introduces the gate concept; SG-1 expands it across a long television run. If you want a shorter commitment, Atlantis has five seasons and Universe has two, while Origins offers a prequel set in 1939. The titles form a broader franchise, but these options let you choose by length and format rather than waiting for the canceled project.

Where can you watch Stargate?
Amazon’s franchise page provides Prime Video viewing links, but streaming rights and purchase options can change by country and over time. Check the listing in your region before choosing a title; a link on the franchise page is not a guarantee that every entry is currently available to stream everywhere.
