Its central tension is simple and effective: New York homicide detective Frank Keller is investigating murders linked to personal ads while falling for Helen Cruger, a woman who may be connected to the case.
What is Sea of Love about?
Released in the United States on September 15, 1989, Sea of Love is a thriller and drama directed by Harold Becker, starring Al Pacino, Ellen Barkin, and John Goodman. The American Film Institute lists its running time as 113 minutes; Universal displays 1 hour 53 minutes. AFI Catalog and Universal Pictures At Home both classify it as R-rated.
Veteran detective Frank Keller and his partner, Sherman Touhey, pursue a killer targeting men who answered lonely-hearts ads. The investigation gets personal when Frank meets divorcee Helen Cruger and begins an affair, even as evidence may connect her to the murders. The result is a mystery in which attraction complicates the detective’s judgment rather than offering a break from the case.
Why it fits a start-of-the-week watch
The film’s appeal lies in that uneasy overlap between pursuit and desire. The investigation gives the story a clear whodunit engine; Frank and Helen’s chemistry adds uncertainty about how much he can trust what he wants to believe. It is moody and adult without requiring a viewer to approach it as a procedural puzzle alone.

The title song also belongs to the mystery’s atmosphere. The song “Sea of Love” recurs as a crime-scene motif, and AFI credits Phil Phillips’s recording as well as a Tom Waits version over the end titles. That musical thread gives the case a memorable, romantic surface that sits uneasily beside its violence.
Where can you watch Sea of Love?
Universal lists the film on Blu-ray and DVD and offers digital purchase or rental. It also lists a Blu-ray double feature with Scent of a Woman. These formats make the choice straightforward: rent digitally for a one-time watch, buy digitally for ongoing access through a service, or choose a disc if you prefer a physical copy. The studio listing does not establish current prices, retailer stock, or disc extras.
