Star Wars is a science-fiction franchise with stories set across thousands of years. If you are new to it, start with the theatrical films in release order to experience major reveals as audiences first did; choose chronological order if following the events in the galaxy matters more to you. StarWars.com presents both approaches, not one mandatory route.
What is Star Wars?
Star Wars is a connected fictional universe told across theatrical films, live-action and animated series, games, novels, comics, manga, audio dramas, specials, and licensed merchandise. Its stories span thousands of in-universe years, so StarWars.com groups them into eras to help readers and viewers understand where each story fits.

The films and series are the most direct starting point for a screen-focused introduction. The wider catalog lets fans explore particular characters, eras, or formats, but you do not need to consume every part of it to begin.
Which viewing order should you choose?
| Approach | What it prioritizes | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Release order | The sequence in which major films and their reveals first reached audiences | First-time viewers who want the original storytelling context | Events jump between different periods of the fictional timeline |
| Chronological order | The sequence of story events in StarWars.com’s viewing guide | Viewers who prefer to follow the galaxy’s history forward | Some series overlap or span periods, so the list is not a perfectly linear timeline |
For a first watch, release order is a useful default because it preserves the original sequence of major reveals. Chronological order is equally valid if continuity is your priority. StarWars.com’s May 1, 2025 viewing guide puts the choice simply: “Whichever order you choose…is the right one!”

How does the official chronological guide move through the story?
The guide begins with The Acolyte and prequel-era stories, then moves through the Clone Wars and the period of the Empire. Rebellion-era stories connect to the original trilogy, followed by stories set in the New Republic and the sequel era. Treat this as an orientation map rather than a minute-by-minute chronology.
Where the timeline overlaps
- The anthology series Tales cover a wide span of time rather than sitting neatly in one period.
- Andor and Star Wars Rebels take place concurrently; both lead into Rogue One.
- Star Wars Resistance begins before The Force Awakens and continues beyond it.
These overlaps are why a strict chronological watch can be less straightforward than following a single numbered list. You can watch each series as a whole, or use the official guide’s placements to understand its broad position in the timeline.

Do you need to watch every film and series?
No. The breadth of Star Wars is a choice, not an entry requirement. Begin with the films if you want the main theatrical story, then add a series, game, or book when a character or era catches your interest. Animated and live-action stories are both part of the franchise; its publishing and audio formats offer further ways to explore it.
The scale is substantial: StarWars.com counted 12 Star Wars movies released through 2025, including the theatrical release of The Clone Wars. That is a dated count from the site’s 2025 year-in-review, not a count updated for films released after 2025.

StarWars.com’s viewing guide identifies Disney+ as a place to watch the films and series it lists. That does not guarantee that every title is available in every country or remains in a local catalog: streaming rights and catalogs can vary by region and change over time. Check your local Disney+ catalog before subscribing.
The franchise also includes additional documentaries, specials, shorts, vintage animation, and other material beyond the main films and series. These are optional extras rather than prerequisites for choosing a starting order.

What is new in the franchise landscape?
StarWars.com’s 2025 year-in-review covered activity across series, games, books, and comics. Among the screen releases it identified for 2025 were Andor Season 2, the Skeleton Crew finale, Visions Volume 3, and Tales of the Underworld. These are examples of activity reported for that year, not a guarantee of what is currently streaming in a particular region.
The film catalog lists The Mandalorian and Grogu and gives Star Wars: Starfighter a planned theatrical date of May 28, 2027. A planned date can change, so check the official film listing for the latest status.
