Star Wars: Reign of the Empire is a political novel trilogy about the Empire’s rise and the early foundations of organized resistance. Two books are confirmed: Alexander Freed’s The Mask of Fear, the first installment, and Rebecca Roanhorse’s sequel, Edge of the Abyss. The available official listings do not establish the third book’s title, author, release date, or format.

What is Reign of the Empire about?

The series follows the political conditions in which opposition to the Empire takes shape. The publisher descriptions frame its story through two stages: the first year of Imperial rule, when Mon Mothma, Bail Organa, and Saw Gerrera are still finding their direction, and a later period when the Senate has lost influence and resistance faces pressure to splinter.

That makes the novels less a story of an already unified Rebel Alliance than one about the difficulties of building opposition: dissent inside political institutions, the Empire’s use of truth and loyalty, and the cost of resisting a government that is consolidating power. Those themes are drawn from the publishers’ descriptions of the books.

Which books are confirmed, and what order should you read them in?

Reading order Book and author Story setting and focus Publisher-listed formats
1 The Mask of Fear by Alexander Freed The first year of Imperial rule. The publisher synopsis follows Mon Mothma, Bail Organa, and Saw Gerrera before they become architects of the Rebel Alliance. Paperback, ebook, and audiobook in the Penguin Books Australia catalogue. Its paperback listing gives a publication date of 31 March 2026 for that regional edition.
2 Edge of the Abyss by Rebecca Roanhorse A year before Andor season one, more than a decade into Imperial rule. Mon Mothma and Bail Organa face shrinking influence in the Senate as Bail turns toward clandestine resistance and scattered rebel groups risk division. Hardcover, ebook, and audiobook in the US Penguin Random House listing, dated 15 September 2026.

StarWars.com identifies The Mask of Fear as the first book in the trilogy; Penguin Random House describes Edge of the Abyss as its sequel. Read them in that order to follow the shift from early opposition under Imperial rule to a later, more developed but still fragmented resistance.

How does the political story change between the books?

The Mask of Fear: opposition in the Empire’s first year

The first novel is set before its central figures have become leaders of the Rebel Alliance. Its three perspectives—Mothma, Organa, and Gerrera—allow the story to approach opposition from different positions. The publisher’s synopsis places them in the first year of Imperial tyranny, a moment when resistance is not yet a settled alliance.

Penguin Books Australia’s synopsis uses the line “Before the Rebellion, the Empire reigned.” It captures the book’s focus on the period before organized rebellion has taken shape.

Edge of the Abyss: diminishing institutional power and fragile alliances

The sequel moves more than a decade into Imperial rule, to a period one year before Andor season one. Its publisher description shifts attention to the limits of working through the Senate: Mothma and Organa’s influence is waning, while the Empire manipulates truth and loyalty. Outside the Senate, rebel factions remain scattered and vulnerable to division.

Together, the descriptions suggest a progression from the first book’s search for direction to the second book’s problem of sustaining resistance as formal political power recedes. That is a comparison of the publishers’ stated settings and themes, not a claim about the novels’ full plots.
