The Acolyte is an eight-episode Star Wars mystery set in the High Republic era, where a Jedi investigation into a series of crimes leads toward an assassin, a buried history and the dangerous figure known as the Stranger. It is worth considering if you want a story that questions the Jedi as well as exploring the dark side—but its divided reception is a reminder that its choices will not work for every viewer. Season 1 is complete; the series was reported not to be returning for a second season.
What is The Acolyte about?
Set roughly a century before the events of the Skywalker films, during Star Wars’ High Republic era, the series begins with a crime investigation. A respected Jedi Master pursues a dangerous warrior from his past, and the case opens onto a story about a mysterious assassin, twin sisters and a secret that has haunted the people involved for 16 years. The official StarWars.com series guide describes the investigation and provides episode summaries.

Creator Leslye Headland has said she was interested in telling “a story about the Sith.” The series also puts attention on how different characters understand good and evil. Headland said she did not see the Jedi as antagonists, while describing an interest in how people who do wrong can justify their actions to themselves. That framing makes the show less a straightforward Jedi-versus-evil story than a mystery about conduct, perspective and the consequences of past choices.
Is season 1 worth watching?
That depends on what you want from Star Wars. The season offers a less familiar era and a mystery-led structure, with its central questions unfolding across the episodes rather than as a self-contained adventure. Its appeal rests on whether you find the reveals persuasive, whether the character decisions and performances make the emotional turns land, and whether the action and visual world-building serve the story.

The show’s reception is notably divided. On October 8, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 79% Tomatometer based on 251 critic reviews and a 19% Popcornmeter from more than 25,000 audience ratings. Those are changing scores on an aggregator, not a representative survey or a verdict on the season; they are useful context for how differently critics and audience raters responded. The site’s critics consensus praised the show’s risks with Star Wars lore and described it as having potential to grow. Check Rotten Tomatoes’ current page for updated figures.
Disney reported 4.8 million views in one day and 11.1 million global views over five days for the premiere, calling it the biggest series premiere on Disney+ of 2024 at that point. Disney calculates a view by dividing total stream time by runtime, so these figures do not mean that many unique people watched, and they say nothing by themselves about how many viewers finished the season.
