Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is an ambitious, single-player sequel that gives Cal Kestis a bigger world to explore and more ways to fight. That expanded scope makes its adventure and combat richer, though the added ambition is not always matched by polish: story rough edges sometimes dull the experience. If you enjoyed Jedi: Fallen Order, the sequel offers a compelling next chapter; newcomers can begin here, too.
What is Jedi: Survivor about?
Developed by Respawn Entertainment in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is a single-player, third-person action-adventure and a direct continuation of Jedi: Fallen Order. The story takes place five years later, with Cal Kestis now a Jedi Knight facing the Empire and new threats. Lucasfilm describes it as a narratively driven adventure across new planets and familiar frontiers.

The time jump gives the sequel room to move Cal forward while retaining the focused, galaxy-hopping shape of the first game. In its April 26, 2023 review, Ars Technica’s Alessandro Fillari praised how the larger game builds a dense Star Wars universe around its central adventure. The review also found that rough edges can blunt the main story and that the scale sometimes strains under its own ambition.
What’s new compared with Fallen Order?
The sequel broadens the established action-adventure formula rather than replacing it. Lucasfilm’s official game description highlights additional Force abilities and lightsaber styles, alongside new skills and equipment that shape combat and exploration. New planets, varied biomes and challenges give Cal more ground to cover.
#1 Best Overall
- The story of Cal Kestis continues five years after the events of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and follows Cal’s increasingly desperate fight as the galaxy descends further into darkness.
- Continue Cal’s Journey - No longer a Padawan, Cal has come into his own and grown into a powerful Jedi Knight.
- Go Beyond Your Training – The cinematic combat system returns with additional Force abilities and new lightsaber fighting styles.
- Explore an Untamed Galaxy – Discover new planets and familiar frontiers in the Star Wars galaxy, each with unique challenges, and enemies.
- The Dark Times are closing in – with enemies surrounding him, Cal will need to decide how far he’s willing to go to save those closest to him.
Companions also take a more active role. In an April 9, 2023 StarWars.com interview, game director Stig Asmussen described the “Characters in Gameplay” system: companions such as Bode and Merrin can fight alongside Cal, assist with puzzles and help the party negotiate planets. Players can call on a companion for a special attack, subject to a limited cooldown.
These additions strengthen the sequel’s sense of scale and give encounters and exploration more options. They do not mean every system is simply better: the Ars Technica review’s central trade-off is that the broader scope supports the story and core play overall, while some roughness remains and the ambition occasionally buckles.
Rank #2
- No longer a Padawan, Cal has come into his own and grown into a powerful Jedi Knight; Carrying the memories and expectations of the Jedi Order with him, his crusade against the Empire has only become more perilous
- The cinematic combat system returns with additional Force abilities and new lightsaber fighting styles; Creatively leverage all these abilities and weapons to strategically take on an expanded host of enemies, sizing up strengths and weaknesses
- Discover new planets and familiar frontiers in the Star Wars galaxy, each with unique biomes, challenges, and enemies; Master new skills, equipment, and abilities that will augment the ways you explore, fight, and roam
- With larger areas to explore and more to discover off the beaten path, players who adventure beyond the horizon will find hidden rewards
Do you need to play Jedi: Fallen Order first?
No. EA says each game can stand alone, and progress does not transfer from Fallen Order. You can start with Survivor without playing the earlier game. Knowing Cal’s previous journey will add character and story context, but it is not a prerequisite.
What platforms is Jedi: Survivor on?
EA lists the game for PC through the EA app, Steam and Epic Games Store, as well as PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. It first launched for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC in 2023. The PS4 and Xbox One editions followed on September 17, 2024, according to EA’s release announcement.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Jedi: Survivor worth playing if you liked Fallen Order?
It is a strong choice if what you want is more Cal Kestis, broader exploration and a deeper set of combat options. Its companion assists, added Force abilities and lightsaber styles build on the first game’s foundation, while the larger adventure gives the story more room to unfold. The main reservation is the same one that defines the sequel’s ambition: expansion brings some rough edges, and the main story does not always land as cleanly as its strongest ideas.
Rank #4
Asmussen described the game as one that “evolves the gameplay experience of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order in every way” in EA’s 2023 launch announcement. That is the director’s promotional characterization, not an independent verdict; the more measured takeaway from the Ars Technica review is a sequel that achieves an impressive scale and compelling core, but does not make every part of that scale feel equally assured.
