Star Trek: Lower Decks ended with its fifth-season finale, “The New Next Generation,” released December 19, 2024. The finale closes the series while giving its crew new roles and leaving their in-universe stories open. That open ending is not a confirmation that another season or revival is in production.
How Lower Decks ends
In “The New Next Generation,” Captain Carol Freeman leaves the Cerritos to command Starbase 80. Jack Ransom takes over as captain of the Cerritos and appoints Beckett Mariner and Brad Boimler co-provisional first officers. The changes give the crew new responsibilities without resolving their futures as though their adventures must stop there.

Starbase 80 is framed as a place for second chances. In StarTrek.com’s February 8, 2025 post-finale interview, actor Tawny Newsome described that quality as central to the station, while creator Mike McMahan said Freeman’s move opened up story possibilities.
Why the finale calls this a beginning
Mariner states the ending’s theme directly: “This isn’t the end of a story, it’s the beginning. We’re going to make her proud.” Newsome said the speech celebrates the crew and its relationships. She also called the finale “a fitting end to this chapter of Lower Decks.”

The characters’ new jobs make that sentiment concrete: they can continue to grow and work together in the Star Trek universe, even though the television series has concluded. The finale works both as a send-off and as an open-ended moment for the crew.
Is Lower Decks really over?
Yes, as a series: Paramount identified season five as the final season. Paramount Press Express announced “The New Next Generation” as the series finale, with a December 19, 2024 release date. Season five comprised 10 episodes.
There is a difference between an open fictional ending and a commissioned continuation. In the final-season announcement, McMahan and executive producer Alex Kurtzman said they “remain hopeful that even beyond Season 5, Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, Rutherford and the whole Cerritos crew will live on with new adventures.” That is an expression of hope, not a renewal or production announcement. The cited official materials do not confirm a follow-up series.
How many episodes are there?
Paramount Global Content’s catalog, accessed in 2026, lists Star Trek: Lower Decks as five seasons and 50 episodes, with a listed runtime of 30 minutes. Those catalog figures describe the series listing; regional streaming availability and service terms may change.
