After learning during post-production that season five would be the show’s last, co-showrunner Michelle Paradise and the team added a future-set coda to “Life, Itself.” It ties the ship’s fate to the earlier Short Trek “Calypso” and gives the characters a final send-off. Paradise had only begun developing the possible season-six idea; she said it was never broken into episodes or outlined.
What changed when season five became the last season?
“Life, Itself” was initially written to finish season five, not the entire series. Paradise told StarTrek.com that the team learned during editing that the season would be the show’s final one: “We didn’t know, of course, going into the writing of the finale that it would be our series finale. Originally, we just had the season finale.”

Paramount had announced on February 14, 2024, that the ten-episode fifth season would be the final season. The official season schedule listed an April 4 premiere, with two episodes at launch and weekly Thursday releases in the territories named in the announcement. Those are historical release details, not a statement about present-day streaming availability. The official episode listing identifies “Life, Itself” as episode 510 and the series finale, written by Kyle Jarrow and Michelle Paradise and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi.
What was the possible season-six story?
Paradise had started considering a season built around “Calypso,” the 2018 Short Trek featuring a sentient Discovery far in the future. In a TV Insider interview, she described the concept as early-stage: “So I was in the early stages of trying to work on a story where we would ultimately tie that up.”

It was not a completed season plan. In a Variety interview syndicated by Yahoo, Paradise said, “We never got to the point of really breaking it or outlining it.” There is no established episode-by-episode account of what that hypothetical season would have contained. What is clear is the intended narrative engine: finding a way to connect Discovery’s story to the future seen in “Calypso.”
How the coda connects “Life, Itself” to “Calypso”
The finale’s coda jumps ahead to an older Burnham, now an admiral, and Book, with their son Leto. Burnham takes the original Discovery, NCC-1031, and its AI, Zora, on a final mission. That future mission supplies the bridge to the ship’s circumstances in “Calypso.” Paradise explained to StarTrek.com why the link mattered: “It felt very important that once we knew that we were wrapping up the series as a whole that we address how Discovery got out there.” She also clarified that the ship in the Short Trek was Discovery NCC-1031, not Discovery-A.
The coda therefore resolves a lingering question about the ship while allowing the series to look beyond its immediate ending. Paradise said the creative team wanted the wrap-up to serve both viewers who knew the Short Trek and those who had not seen it: “It was just really important to us that we wrap everything up in a way that would not only address the plot things hanging out like ‘Calypso,’ for people who had watched the Short Trek, but also that it be satisfying for people who hadn’t.”
How the original ending differs from the added coda
| Element | Season-finale ending as first developed | Series-finale coda |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Close the season’s immediate story. | Close the series and connect Discovery’s future to “Calypso.” |
| Time horizon | Burnham and Book walk off together at the end of their immediate story. | A jump forward shows their later life, their son Leto, and Burnham’s final mission with Discovery. |
| Story scale | A season ending, without the added future bridge. | A compressed resolution and goodbye, developed under a limited schedule, as Paradise described in TV Insider. |
| What is established | The ending the team first prepared for the season. | The aired coda and its link to “Calypso”; no detailed season-six outline was completed. |
Was the ending planned from the start?
No. The future coda was added after the team learned that season five would end the series. The finale episode is more than 80 minutes long according to the 2024 StarTrek.com interview, but its extended runtime does not mean the series-ending material had been part of the original season finale. The sixth-season notion was a separate, unrealized possibility; the aired coda is the finished resolution viewers can see.
