There is no official Star Wars ranking of its alien characters. This is an editorial selection based on three things: how much a character affects major events, their relationships with central figures, and how their story connects different eras. By those measures, Chewbacca, Jabba the Hutt, Yoda, and Ahsoka Tano each matter for a distinct reason.
What makes an alien character important?
Importance is not a measure of screen time, how unusual a species looks, or a place on an official list. StarWars.com’s Databank organizes character biographies and franchise entries; it does not rank alien characters. The four figures below are useful examples because each changes the story in a different way: through alliance, criminal power, teaching, or leadership across eras.
Chewbacca: the ally who keeps showing up at pivotal moments
Chewbacca’s importance is both personal and practical. StarWars.com describes the Wookiee warrior as Han Solo’s longtime co-pilot, but his story reaches well beyond that partnership. His Databank biography connects him to the Rebel Alliance, the Battle of Kashyyyk, Yoda’s escape after Order 66, and the effort to rescue Han from Jabba.
Those connections make Chewbacca a recurring participant in major events rather than simply a companion to a central character. He links the fight against the Empire to the earlier fall of the Republic, while his loyalty to Han gives the rescue story its personal stakes.

Jabba the Hutt: a criminal power who creates the conflict
Jabba matters because his reach is political and criminal as well as personal. StarWars.com calls him one of the galaxy’s most powerful gangsters, influential in both politics and the underworld. His claim over Han’s debt and his capture of Han set the rescue attempt on Tatooine in motion.
Leia’s role in that escape shows how Jabba’s power turns into a direct confrontation with a central protagonist. Her Databank biography recounts her disguise as Boushh and Jabba’s death during the escape. He is not a guide or ally: his influence makes him a major obstacle, and his actions set events in motion for other characters.

Yoda: a teacher connecting Jedi generations
Yoda’s importance comes from the reach of his teaching. StarWars.com says he trained Jedi for over 800 years, took part in the Clone Wars, and later instructed Luke Skywalker. His biography therefore connects generations of Jedi and brings the history of the Order directly into Luke’s story.
The Databank lists Yoda’s species as “Unknown.” That uncertainty is part of the established information, so it is more accurate to leave his species unnamed than to assign him one. See the official Yoda entry for his biography.

Ahsoka Tano: a role that changes beyond the Jedi Order
Ahsoka begins as Anakin Skywalker’s Padawan during the Clone Wars, but her significance is not limited to that relationship. StarWars.com describes her as a respected leader and warrior who continued to support those fighting for peace after leaving the Jedi Order.
That change gives Ahsoka a different kind of continuity from a character defined by one institution or partnership: her story carries on as her role evolves. Her Databank biography traces that progression.

How the four characters shape the larger story
| Character | Distinctive influence | Connection to central figures | How the story continues |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chewbacca | Recurring ally and participant in key events | Han Solo’s longtime co-pilot; connected to Yoda’s escape after Order 66 | Links events from the fall of the Republic to the Rebel struggle |
| Jabba the Hutt | Criminal and political power whose actions create a central conflict | Captures Han and becomes the target of Leia’s escape plan | His influence shapes the Tatooine rescue conflict |
| Yoda | Teacher with influence across generations of Jedi | Trained Jedi for over 800 years and instructed Luke | Connects the Clone Wars and Jedi history to Luke’s training |
| Ahsoka Tano | Leader and warrior whose role extends beyond the Jedi Order | Anakin Skywalker’s Padawan during the Clone Wars | Continues supporting the fight for peace after leaving the Order |
This comparison is editorial, based on the roles described in the official biographies; it is not an official Star Wars rank order. The four examples do not exhaust the franchise’s important alien characters. They show why importance can mean very different things: shaping a political conflict, sustaining an alliance, passing on an institution’s history, or carrying a character’s purpose into a new role.
