These are architectural distinctions, not guarantees of universal performance. The cited vendor documentation explains specific workflows and trade-offs; it does not establish a neutral winner for latency, cost, scale, fill, or measurement.
How CSAI works
In a client-side workflow, the player is central to ad handling: it makes or handles an ad request, plays the ad, and returns to the program. The player may therefore manage a more distinct handoff between content and advertisement. AWS contrasts this with its SSAI description, in which the ad call happens upstream of the CDN rather than in the client (AWS for M&E, “Sold on SSAI”).
This approach can accommodate player-driven behavior, but a publisher must integrate and maintain the relevant ad logic across the devices and player SDKs it supports. Transition behavior and client-side ad blocking can also affect delivery; neither should be treated as a universal outcome for every device or configuration.

How SSAI works
A server-side video pipeline identifies ad opportunities, requests ads, and stitches selected ad media into the delivered stream or a personalized manifest. In a common AWS Elemental MediaTailor architecture, the service retrieves a content manifest, queries an ad decision service, and returns a personalized manifest through a CDN (AWS Well-Architected Streaming Media Lens).
Because the delivered presentation can contain both program and ads, the player need not perform the same content-to-ad switch as in a client-side flow. That can reduce visible transitions and simplify player requirements, but it moves operational responsibility into the server-side insertion path. AWS identifies insertion and decision services as potential scaling concerns. Impression and progress reporting are not automatic merely because media is stitched: tracking depends on the manifest, player, and measurement implementation.

How SGAI works—and why the label varies
SGAI keeps ad decisioning on the server while giving the client instructions about ad timing or playback. In Google’s documented workflow, the player application schedules requests for pre-conditioned ads served as a pod-serving manifest; an optional server-inserted marker can guide that schedule (Google for Developers: Dynamic Ad Insertion, Server Guided Ad Insertion).
Google’s April 7, 2025 announcement describes both client-side stitching, where the app proactively loads an ad break, and server-side stitching, where a packager or encoder places an ad marker pointing to an ad manifest in the content manifest (Google Ads Developer Blog). Google describes SGAI as “an ad insertion method where an ad server instructs the video player on how to manage ad transitions dynamically within the content stream.”

AWS MediaTailor provides another example: its SGAI mode references ads through separate playlists rather than stitching them directly into media playlists. MediaTailor’s player-select mode allows a player to choose stitched or guided delivery when starting a session, while stitched-only mode requires SSAI (AWS Elemental MediaTailor: Understanding ad insertion behavior; Server-guided ad insertion overview and implementation).
So SGAI does not name one exact stitching arrangement across vendors. When evaluating a service, check its actual manifest format, ad references, markers, and player responsibilities rather than assuming that its SGAI label means the same workflow as another provider’s.

Which approach should a streaming service choose?
There is no source-supported universal winner. Compare the architectures against the devices you serve, the ad formats you need, the control you have over players, and the work your team can operate.
- Device and player control: Can you update the player on every target device and reliably process timed metadata, markers, or separate playlists?
- Ad formats: Are pre-, mid-, and post-rolls sufficient, or do you need formats such as squeezebacks or L-banners? Google says its SGAI approach can support examples such as these, but confirm availability for your specific player and devices (Google Ads Developer Blog).
- Playback continuity: Do you require ads to appear within one continuous presentation, or can the player manage a switch? AWS describes SSAI as avoiding the client’s switch between content and advertisement, while its SGAI mode references separate ad playlists (AWS Well-Architected Streaming Media Lens; AWS Elemental MediaTailor).
- Scaling and cost placement: Compare server-side decisioning and stitching load with client work and bandwidth for guided retrieval. AWS says SGAI can help with some SSAI scaling challenges, not that it always costs less or supports more capacity.
- Measurement: Specify which component fires impression and progress events, and how those events reconcile with ad-server reports. The cited sources do not establish a provider-neutral measurement winner.
- Operational ownership: Assign responsibility for ad markers, manifest generation, ad transcoding, CDN behavior, player SDK integration, and incident diagnosis.
The IAB Digital Video Glossary defines SSAI as stitching content and ads at the server rather than browser level and notes ad-blocking mitigation as a possible benefit. That terminology reference is not proof that SSAI defeats every ad blocker or guarantees ad delivery (IAB Digital Video Glossary, 2018).
