Spoilers for the Season 2 finale. Gi-hun returned to the games to stop them, but the Front Man deceived him, his revolt failed, and his friend Jung-bae was killed. Those are the events that shape the opening of Squid Game Season 3, the series’ final season.
Why Gi-hun went back into the games
Three years after winning the competition, Gi-hun—Player 456—abandons his plan to go to the United States and re-enters the games with a different purpose: to stop the people running them. The stakes remain a 45.6 billion won prize for the surviving players, but Gi-hun is no longer focused on winning it. Netflix’s Season 2 guide describes his return and the new players competing for the prize.
His goal puts him at odds with the game’s structure. Rather than simply survive each round, he tries to persuade other contestants to work together against the organizers. That effort gives the season its central tension: Gi-hun wants to save people, but he is trying to do it inside a system designed to turn them against one another.
Who is Player 001 in Season 2?
Player 001, introduced as Young-il, is actually In-ho—the Front Man who directs the competition. He joins the players while concealing his identity, becoming an apparent ally to Gi-hun. Gi-hun does not know that the person beside him is also the person overseeing the game.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The reveal makes the alliance a deliberate deception, not a misunderstanding between two players. Netflix’s ending explainer identifies Young-il as the Front Man and details how the betrayal unfolds.
Did Gi-hun’s rebellion succeed?
No. Gi-hun rallies players in an uprising against the game’s architects. The revolt gets close to the control center, but the Front Man turns on the group and defeats it. The attempt to reach the people controlling the competition ends in failure, not in the games being dismantled.

The collapse matters because Gi-hun’s plan has cost lives without ending the system he came to stop. The players who survive are left with the consequences of a revolt that the Front Man helped bring down.
What happened to Jung-bae?
At the end of Episode 7, the Front Man kills Jung-bae, Gi-hun’s close friend. Jung-bae’s death turns the defeat into a personal loss for Gi-hun as well as a political one: the rebellion has failed, and the friend who stood with him is gone.

What Season 3 inherits from the finale
Season 3 begins in the aftermath of the failed rebellion, Jung-bae’s death, and Gi-hun’s discovery that his apparent ally was the Front Man. Netflix identifies Season 3 as the final season and says its story continues from those events; Netflix’s Season 3 page states that all six episodes are streaming.
Creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk framed the next chapter around what Gi-hun might do after his efforts fail. In Netflix’s Season 3 coverage, Hwang said, “The new season will focus on what Gi-hun can and will do after all his efforts fail.” He also described Gi-hun as being “in utter despair after losing everything and watching all his efforts go in vain.” Those are Hwang’s comments on the character’s direction, rather than a promise that Gi-hun will respond in any particular way.
