Spotify did not post a €72 million loss in Q3 2025. The €72 million was an income-tax benefit; the company reported €899 million in net income attributable to owners of the parent. Its operating income was €582 million, while its user base grew to 713 million monthly active users and 281 million Premium Subscribers.
Did Spotify actually post a loss?
No. For the quarter ended September 30, 2025, Spotify reported €582 million in operating income, €827 million in income before tax and €899 million in net income attributable to owners of the parent. The €72 million figure was a tax benefit, presented as a negative tax expense—not a loss. Spotify’s Q3 2025 Form 6-K sets out the figures.
These measures describe different parts of the accounts. Revenue is money earned before expenses; gross profit is revenue less the direct costs of providing the service. Operating income comes after operating expenses. Income before tax also includes finance items, while net income reflects tax as well. Free cash flow is a separate, company-defined measure of cash generation. Spotify reported positive results on both operating income and net income in this quarter.

The bridge is straightforward: €582 million in operating income, plus €245 million in net finance income, produced €827 million in income before tax. A €72 million tax benefit brought net income to €899 million. The gap between operating and net income matters: finance income can include non-operating items such as fair-value movements associated with investments and exchangeable notes, and those items may not recur in the same form. Net income is therefore not interchangeable with recurring operating earnings.

How much did Spotify’s audience grow?
Spotify ended Q3 with 713 million monthly active users (MAUs), up from 640 million a year earlier and 696 million in Q2 2025. The year-over-year increase was 11%; the company added 17 million MAUs sequentially and exceeded its own quarterly guidance by 3 million. Spotify said growth came across all regions, led by Rest of World, Europe and North America, and cited marketing in developing markets and improvements to the mobile free tier as contributors.
Premium Subscribers reached 281 million, 29 million more than a year earlier and 5 million more than in Q2. That was 12% year-over-year growth, with quarterly outperformance led by Latin America and North America. Spotify attributed part of the performance to strong global promotional-campaign intake.

These are company-defined account metrics, not counts of distinct people or paying households. Spotify defines an MAU as an ad-supported user or Premium Subscriber who consumed content for more than zero milliseconds in the previous 30 days. One person may use multiple accounts, and the company says non-bona-fide accounts may occasionally contribute to MAUs; the metric can also include ad-supported users who use methods to avoid ads. Premium Subscribers include accounts on Family and Duo plans, not just household planholders: Family can include up to six Premium accounts and Duo up to two. An account can remain counted during a grace period of up to 30 days after a failed payment. Spotify’s filing explains these definitions and qualifications.
Did audience growth translate into revenue?
Reported revenue was €4.272 billion, up 7% year over year in euros. Spotify also reported 12% growth on a constant-currency basis, a non-IFRS measure intended to remove exchange-rate effects. Unfavorable currency movements reduced reported year-over-year growth by roughly 450 basis points, according to the company. The two percentages are compatible, but 12% is not the reported increase in euro-denominated revenue. The shareholder deck provides the reported and constant-currency figures.

Premium revenue was €3.826 billion, up 9% on a reported basis and 13% in constant currency. Subscriber gains primarily drove that growth. Premium average revenue per user (ARPU) was €4.53, down 4% year over year in reported euros, while constant-currency ARPU was approximately flat. Spotify said price increases were offset by product and market mix. In other words, more subscribers supported higher Premium revenue even as reported revenue per average user declined, with exchange rates and the mix of plans and markets affecting the comparison.
Advertising was the weaker side of the quarter
Ad-supported MAUs grew 11% year over year to 446 million, but ad-supported revenue fell 6% to €446 million on a reported basis; on a constant-currency basis it was approximately flat. Spotify said more music and podcast advertising impressions were offset by softer pricing and optimization of podcast inventory. Automated sales channels remained important contributors to advertising growth. A larger free audience may expand the platform’s reach, but it does not automatically produce proportionate revenue or profit.

What improved in Spotify’s operating performance?
Gross profit rose to €1.351 billion from €1.240 billion in Q3 2024, and gross margin increased to 31.6% from 31.1%. Operating expenses fell 2% year over year, to €769 million from €786 million. Operating income climbed to €582 million from €454 million, and operating margin improved to 13.6% from 11.4%. Free cash flow was €806 million, compared with €711 million a year earlier. The shareholder deck attributes the operating-income outperformance to gross-margin strength, lower-than-forecast social charges, favorable marketing timing and lower personnel-related costs.
One qualification is social charges: they came in €41 million below forecast, affected by changes in Spotify’s share price. Spotify said it does not forecast share-price movements because they are outside its control. That makes the quarter’s operating improvement real, but the size of the beat should not be treated as a purely repeatable operating gain.

What products and initiatives did Spotify highlight?
Spotify’s Q3 materials highlighted roughly 30 product updates, including lossless audio in more than 50 markets, playlist-mixing tools, messaging, taste-profile controls, mobile free-tier improvements and integration with ChatGPT. The company also described new partnerships expanding advertiser access to Spotify’s audio and video inventory.
The filing says the Spotify Partner Program launched in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia on January 2, 2025, then expanded to nine additional markets on April 29. Audiobooks on Premium launched in four additional markets in April. Lossless audio launched in more than 50 markets on September 10, 2025. These launches show where Spotify was developing its platform; the Q3 materials do not establish that any individual feature caused the quarter’s financial results. What did Spotify forecast after Q3?
In November 2025, Spotify issued Q4 guidance—not a current forecast—for 745 million MAUs, 289 million Premium Subscribers, €4.5 billion in revenue, a 32.9% gross margin and €620 million in operating income. The company also expected approximately 13% year-over-year constant-currency revenue growth and approximately 2% constant-currency ARPU growth. These were management estimates at the time, not actual Q4 results. Spotify’s prepared remarks for the earnings call give the outlook.
Spotify said new pricing was in more than 150 markets in 2025, compared with six markets in the prior year, and acknowledged that increases could cause some churn. For judging the business beyond this quarter, the key questions are whether paid additions persist after promotions, whether users accept price changes, whether Premium ARPU improves, and whether ad pricing and sell-through catch up with free-audience growth. Gross margin, operating costs and cash flow also help show whether product expansion is translating into durable operating performance.
