Spotify Free users can generally read lyrics for supported songs again, but the change was a reversal of restrictions some users encountered in 2024—not a brand-new benefit. Spotify’s current support documentation says lyrics are available on both Free and Premium accounts. Premium’s clear lyrics advantage is offline access: lyrics are saved with downloaded music for offline listening as that feature rolls out.
What changed—and what did not
Spotify launched synchronized lyrics globally for Free and Premium users on November 18, 2021. The company later tested or applied limits for some Free accounts, including monthly viewing limits or prompts to subscribe. Reports in May 2024 described those restrictions, but they did not establish a permanent, universal policy; Spotify said features can vary by market, device, and test group. In July 2024, Spotify expanded lyrics access for Free users again. Spotify’s launch announcement, TechCrunch’s May 2024 report, and its July 2024 follow-up document those stages.
Spotify’s current lyrics support page says the feature is available to both tiers. That does not mean every track, device, or market has lyrics. The best description of the U-turn is that Spotify restored ordinary online access for Free users after restrictions affected some of them; it did not make every lyric-related feature free.

| Feature | Free | Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Online lyrics for supported songs | Yes | Yes |
| Synchronized lyrics | Generally available for supported songs | Available for supported songs |

| Lyrics saved for offline listening | No | Rolling out; lyrics are saved with downloaded music |

Spotify announced the translations, previews, and offline-lyrics rollout on February 4, 2026. Translations are available to both tiers where provided; lyric previews are rolling out to both tiers on mobile and tablet; offline lyrics are a Premium feature. See Spotify’s feature announcement for the rollout details. Spotify’s September 2025 Free-experience guide also describes real-time lyrics as part of the Free experience.

- IMPORTANT - READ THIS! Due to changes to Spotify’s platform, Spotify will no longer be supported on Mighty beginning April 21, 2027.**
- TAKE AMAZON MUSIC UNLIMITED & AMAZON MUSIC PRIME OFFLINE - Mighty downloads your streaming music allowing you to listen anytime, anywhere, without a screen or connection. Amazon Music Unlimited or Amazon Music Prime required.
- 8+ HOUR BATTERY - long enough for your longest walks, a week's worth of bedtime stories, or multiple trips to the gym.
- 1000+ SONGS - plenty of space for your many playlists, podcasts, and audiobooks.
- BLUETOOTH AND WIRED CONNECTIONS - Mighty works with Bluetooth headphones and speakers. Mighty also has a 3.5mm headphone jack for wired listening.
How to open lyrics as a Free user
- Start playing a song in the Spotify app.
- Open the Now Playing View.
- On mobile, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to reveal lyrics, if available for that track.
- Use the share control to share a selected passage where the option is available.
Spotify documented this mobile workflow in its 2021 instructions and its 2025 Free-user guide. Desktop, TV, and console apps can present lyrics differently. Spotify’s 2021 launch covered iOS, Android, desktop, gaming consoles, and numerous TV platforms, but that historical list is not a guarantee of identical controls or current availability on every device.
Why lyrics may be missing
A missing lyrics panel does not by itself mean a Free account has hit a paywall. Spotify warns that lyrics may not be available for all songs and devices and that availability can change with market conditions and rights-holder agreements.

- Track coverage: A song may play normally even when lyrics have not been supplied or licensed. A remix, live recording, or alternate version may have different coverage from the original.
- Market or device: Rights arrangements and app support can differ by country, platform, and device.
- Rollout or app issue: A staged feature rollout, outdated app, or local account or app state can affect what appears.
- Different audio: Lyrics are not necessarily available for spoken-word or podcast-like content.
Spotify’s original lyrics launch credited Musixmatch as its lyrics partner, underscoring that the feature depends on licensed catalog data, not just an app setting. A rights gap for one recording cannot be fixed by upgrading a subscription.
Checks to try
- Update Spotify through your device’s app store.
- Test a well-known song that has lyrics, then open Now Playing View and swipe up.
- Try the same account on another device or platform.
- Log out and back in; clear the app cache if your device offers that option.
- If lyrics are missing for many songs across devices, check Spotify’s support or community channels.
Reinstalling may help with a local app fault, but it cannot overcome licensing or account-level availability.

Why Spotify restricted lyrics—and why it reversed course
Spotify has not published a detailed, permanent explanation for the 2024 restrictions or the later expansion. The timing and Premium prompts make it reasonable to view the limits as a possible subscription-conversion test, but that motive is an inference, not a confirmed company explanation. The available reporting does not show that every Free user in every market lost access or establish why Spotify changed the experience.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does it make sense to upgrade just for lyrics?
If you mainly want to read lyrics while online, Spotify’s current documentation does not support upgrading solely for that purpose: basic lyrics are offered on both tiers, subject to track and availability limits. Premium is relevant if you want lyrics alongside downloaded music for offline listening, or if you value its broader listening features. Neither tier guarantees lyrics for every song.

For lyric lookup beyond Spotify, Musixmatch is a dedicated lyrics service and Spotify’s credited data partner; Genius is oriented toward annotations and song context. They are not identical replacements for synchronized lyrics inside Spotify, and their features and availability may differ. Apple Music and YouTube Music are broader streaming alternatives with their own account, market, and feature rules—not no-cost equivalents that can be assumed to work the same way.
