What changed in July 2024
Google ended the ability to buy individual TV episodes or full seasons through Google TV and Android TV devices and the Google TV mobile app. The change concerned the purchase interface—not TV playback or the whole Google TV service. Google’s announcement is here; it was also reported on July 23, 2024 by Droid Life.
Google pointed customers to YouTube for TV-show purchases, subject to country availability. The announcement does not establish that every show, episode or season is offered for sale in every region. A title might be available to stream but not to buy, and availability can differ by country and account.

Old purchases and new purchases have different access expectations
The distinction matters if you expect a TV show bought on YouTube to appear everywhere an older Google purchase does. Google listed Google TV devices, Android TV devices, the Google TV apps for Android and iOS, and YouTube as places to access previously purchased movies and TV shows. That statement covered existing purchases and rentals; it should not be assumed to apply to shows bought on YouTube after the transition.

These are Google’s stated access arrangements, not a guarantee of permanent availability or ownership independent of licensing. The July 2024 notice does not verify whether Google has since changed the policy or how every country, account or app version behaves in 2026.
How to look for a TV show you already bought
If a title is missing, treat that first as a library or account problem to investigate—not proof that the purchase was deleted. These are practical checks, not a guaranteed Google support procedure:

- Sign in to the Google account used for the original purchase.
- Check the purchased-content library in YouTube and the library on a supported Google TV or Android TV device.
- Confirm that you are viewing the correct profile and that the title is listed as purchased, rather than assuming a streaming listing represents a purchase.
- Review Google Payments or your purchase history for the transaction and keep the receipt.
- If the title remains missing, contact Google support with the account and transaction details.
An account mismatch, profile selection, regional settings, app behavior, a licensing change or a temporary service issue could affect what appears. The announcement itself does not identify a single cause for every missing-title case.
How to buy a TV show now
Start by searching for the title on YouTube. Before paying, check that the listing is specifically for purchase, is available in your country, and says where it can be played. Do not assume that a YouTube TV-show purchase will appear in every Google TV library surface; Google’s notice describes narrower access for post-change purchases than for older purchases.

- Check purchase availability for your country and Google account.
- Verify playback options on the devices you intend to use.
- Compare the listed purchase price with temporary access through a streaming subscription or another retailer. Availability, price and portability vary, and the cited notice does not establish them for particular titles.
What this change does not mean
The 2024 announcement was specifically about transactional purchases of TV episodes and seasons through named Google TV and Android TV surfaces. It did not announce the end of Google TV devices, Android TV playback, movie purchases, movie rentals or streaming subscriptions generally. Nor did it concern YouTube TV, Google’s live-TV service. Buying an individual show or season is different from subscribing to a streaming service or live-TV package.
For viewers, the practical trade-off is a less unified buying and viewing experience: older purchases had a wider set of access points in Google’s notice, while new TV-show purchases were directed to YouTube. Because the notice is dated July 2024 and does not confirm the current experience in every region, check the title’s purchase and playback details in your own account before paying.
