Spotify did test restricting lyrics for some Free users in 2023, but it did not permanently remove lyrics from the Free tier for everyone. After a broader restriction affected some users in 2024, Spotify said it was expanding Free access again. As of August 18, 2026, Spotify’s U.S. support page says lyrics are available to both Free and Premium users, with availability depending on the song, device, market and rights-holder agreements.
What Spotify tested in September 2023
On September 5, 2023, TechCrunch reported that some Spotify Free listeners could no longer see lyrics and instead saw the message, “Enjoy lyrics on Spotify Premium.” Spotify described the change to TechCrunch and The Verge as “only a test” involving a limited number of users in two markets. Spotify did not identify those markets, say how long the test would run or announce a permanent policy. The report therefore did not establish that lyrics had been removed from Free accounts globally—or that the affected users were in the United States. TechCrunch’s report on the 2023 test
The headline’s “strips lyrics” phrasing described what affected listeners saw, but it is too broad if read as a lasting policy for every Free user. The accurate scope is a limited test in two unspecified markets.
How the restriction changed in 2024
May: reports of a paywall and monthly limit
On May 2, 2024, TechCrunch reported that Spotify had again put lyrics behind a paywall for some Free users. Reports described a limit of three song lyrics views per month for affected users. That figure was not published by Spotify as a universal rule, and the available reporting did not establish that Free users in every market had the same limit. Spotify’s public explanation emphasized that feature availability could vary by tier, market and device. TechCrunch’s May 2024 report

July: Spotify said it was expanding Free access
On July 30, 2024, Spotify said it was expanding lyrics access for Free users worldwide after complaints. The company did not disclose the new monthly limit, so the announcement did not establish that every Free account received identical or unlimited access. Spotify also did not publish a clear conversion result showing whether the restriction increased Premium subscriptions. The later expansion is consistent with a retreat from the tighter limits, but it does not prove that Spotify considered the experiment a failure. TechCrunch’s July 2024 report
What Free and Premium users can access now
Spotify’s U.S. support page, checked against the current policy as of August 18, 2026, says lyrics are available to both Free and Premium users. Spotify cautions that lyrics may not be available for every song or device, and availability can vary by market and rights-holder agreements. Its February 2026 announcement also distinguishes ordinary lyric viewing from offline lyrics: translations and lyric previews were announced for both tiers, while offline lyrics are a Premium feature associated with downloaded music.

| Feature | Free | Premium | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard lyrics | Available | Available | Not guaranteed for every song, device or market; rights-holder agreements can affect availability. |
| Lyric previews | Available | Available | Spotify announced previews for supported mobile and tablet experiences; rollout and settings may affect what appears. Spotify says previews are not available on music videos. |
| Lyric translations | Available | Available | Announced as global for both tiers; a translation must exist for the song. |
| Offline lyrics | Not included | Available | Spotify announced offline lyrics as a Premium feature tied to downloaded music. |
These distinctions matter: a Premium prompt does not establish that all lyrics require Premium, while an inability to access lyrics without an internet connection may reflect the Premium-only offline feature. Spotify’s current U.S. lyrics support page explains availability and where to find lyrics. Its February 4, 2026 announcement covers previews, translations and offline access.
Why lyrics might still be missing
- One song is affected: The track may not have lyrics supplied or licensed. A missing lyric for one song alone is not evidence of a tier-wide restriction.
- One device is affected: Spotify says device support can vary. The interface may also differ across app versions and platforms.
- You see a limit or Premium prompt: This could reflect an account- or market-level experiment; it does not establish a permanent global policy.
- You see a preview rather than full lyrics: A lyric preview is a different experience from the full synchronized lyrics view.
- The track is a music video: Spotify says lyric previews are not available on music videos.
- The app behaves unexpectedly: An outdated app, interface change or temporary bug may be responsible.
- You are offline: Offline lyrics are a Premium feature under Spotify’s February 2026 announcement.
What to try before assuming Free lyrics were removed
- Start playing the track and open the Now Playing view.
- On a phone or tablet, scroll to the Lyrics section. On desktop or the web player, select the Lyrics control at the bottom.
- Try another song. If lyrics work elsewhere, the issue may be specific to the track.
- Check another supported device to see whether the problem is device-specific.
- Update or restart the Spotify app, then check the track again.
- If a Premium prompt or usage limit appears, note the country, platform, app version and date, and capture the wording. That helps distinguish an account-level experience from a general policy.
Spotify’s support instructions provide the current in-app paths. If lyrics remain unavailable across songs and devices, Spotify support is the appropriate place to check account-specific access.

Is Premium worth upgrading for lyrics?
Upgrading solely because lyrics are missing from one song or one device is a weak fix: the cause may be catalog availability, licensing or device support, and Premium does not guarantee lyrics for every track. Premium is more relevant if offline lyrics are important or if you also value the broader plan, including ad-free playback and offline listening. Spotify’s U.S. Premium page lists the current offer and plan details; promotional eligibility and post-trial pricing can vary by account and date.

Spotify did not publicly state a definitive reason for the 2023 test. A plausible business rationale is that restricting a popular feature could encourage some Free listeners to consider Premium, but that is analysis, not a company-confirmed explanation. The available coverage also does not show that the test materially increased subscriptions.
