Yes—Spotify has tested playlists created from text prompts. The experiment began as a limited test in December 2023, became the AI Playlist beta for Premium mobile users in 2024, expanded to additional markets in 2025, and evolved into the newer Prompted Playlist beta described by Spotify in 2026. It selects existing songs from Spotify’s catalog; it does not generate new recordings.
What Spotify’s AI playlist feature does
You describe a listening situation in ordinary language—such as “instrumental electronica for focused work” or “romantic songs for dinner at home”—and Spotify generates a personalized playlist. You can inspect the tracks, remove unsuitable recommendations, and continue refining the result with follow-up prompts. Spotify describes the feature as combining AI with its personalization technology, but it has not published a complete technical specification of the model or its weighting of listening data. Spotify’s launch announcement and support documentation describe the user-facing behavior.
This is natural-language control over music recommendation, not a chatbot and not an AI music generator. The service does not compose a song, synthesize a vocal, or turn your words into an audio file. It chooses licensed tracks already available in your market.

Spotify has not clearly stated in public materials whether Prompted Playlist is a wholly separate product. The safest interpretation is that it is a newer or expanded evolution of the earlier AI Playlist beta.

Who can use it?
Premium and mobile access
Spotify’s support page documents AI Playlist as a Premium feature on mobile. The original launch covered Android and iOS; it was not announced as a desktop or web-player feature. Free users should not assume they can access the same tool unless Spotify changes its documentation. Spotify support: AI Playlist
Country and account eligibility
Rollouts are staged by market, and beta access can vary by account even in an announced country. For U.S. readers, Spotify announced AI Playlist expansion on September 24, 2024, and Prompted Playlist expansion on January 22, 2026. There is no evidence here for universal worldwide access.

How to create a playlist from a prompt
Original AI Playlist route
- Open Spotify’s mobile app.
- Go to Your Library.
- Tap the + button.
- Choose AI Playlist.
- Describe the mood, activity, genre, setting, artists, or discovery goal.
- Review the generated tracks and remove songs that do not fit.
- Use follow-up prompts to reshape the list, then save it when satisfied.
This path comes from the 2024 launch and support materials. Labels may differ for accounts receiving the newer interface.

Prompted Playlist route
Spotify’s 2026 announcement indicates that users can create a Prompted Playlist, edit the prompt, and start over. Depending on app version and rollout, look under playlist-creation controls such as Create, the + button, or a menu item named Prompted Playlist. Spotify has not promised one permanent path for every account.
If the option is missing
- Confirm that the account is Premium.
- Update the Android or iOS app.
- Check whether the account’s country is supported.
- Look in both Your Library and the newer Create interface.
- Log out, restart the app, and sign back in.
- Check Spotify’s support page for your market.
- Allow for gradual, account-level beta testing; reinstalling or changing language cannot force an unenabled feature.

You can request genre, mood, activity, era, language, tempo, explicit-content preference, familiarity, artist exclusions, approximate length, instrumental music, or a beginning and ending style. Treat these as instructions for the recommender—not guaranteed hard controls.

Refine in small steps
Ask for one change at a time: “Remove songs that feel too slow,” “Make the second half more danceable,” “Keep the mood but move toward soul,” or “Use fewer well-known hits.” Smaller revisions make it easier to see which instruction changed the output.

Prioritize the constraint that matters most
Highly detailed specifications can be interpreted loosely. Put the essential requirement first, then verify the playlist manually. Requests such as an exact track count, a strict release-date range, no repeated artists, or every song under a precise duration should not be treated as guaranteed.
Handle common problems
- Too many familiar songs: request emerging artists, deeper cuts, or music outside your usual listening, then remove persistent repeats.
- Repeated artists: ask for an artist limit and check the result yourself.
- Wrong mood: describe the emotional effect (“warm, relaxed, and social but not sleepy”) instead of relying on one broad genre label.
- Inappropriate lyrics: use Spotify’s explicit-content settings where available and manually review playlists for children or public events; a prompt is not a complete safety filter.
- Regional differences: catalog licensing and local popularity mean a playlist generated in the United States can differ from one generated elsewhere.

Limitations to understand before relying on it
- It remains a beta experience whose name, interface, limits, and availability can change.
- Premium mobile access is the documented requirement for AI Playlist.
- Natural-language requests are interpreted as guidance, not guaranteed filters.
- Artist, genre, language, era, explicit-content, and numerical constraints may be only partially followed.
- Catalog licensing and local availability affect the result by country.
- Popular or familiar tracks can dominate even when you ask for discovery.
- Spotify has not publicly confirmed a specific external model, such as ChatGPT, for the relevant feature version.

Is Premium worth upgrading for this?
Spotify Premium is the relevant subscription if you want to try AI Playlist or Prompted Playlist. In the United States, Individual currently costs $12.99 per month after any applicable introductory offer, while other plan prices vary by tier. The feature is more compelling when combined with Premium’s ad-free listening, offline playback, full playback control, and other personalization tools.
It is a poor reason to subscribe by itself if you need exact BPM, key, energy, transition, or content controls; want AI-generated songs; use a free account; or require guaranteed beta access. Check that the feature appears in your account before upgrading solely for prompt-based playlists.
What this experiment means
Spotify’s progression from a 2023 test to AI Playlist and then Prompted Playlist shows the company moving playlist creation from menus and genre labels toward natural-language interaction. For listeners, the practical value is speed: describe the occasion, inspect the suggestions, and steer the result. It is not yet a fully controllable AI music director, and it does not replace human curation when cultural context, strict sequencing, or hard catalog rules matter.
