Spotify began rolling out its AI Playlist beta to Premium subscribers in the United States, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand on September 24, 2024. On the Spotify mobile app, users can describe a mood, activity, genre, era, or combination of artists in English, and Spotify will generate a personalized playlist. The feature later expanded to more than 40 additional markets, but it remains a Premium, mobile and beta experience rather than a worldwide free or desktop feature.
What Spotify announced on September 24, 2024
The announcement added four markets to the AI Playlist beta: the United States, Canada, Ireland and New Zealand. Spotify had first launched the feature for Premium users in the United Kingdom and Australia in April 2024. The September rollout covered Android and iOS phones and was limited to English-language use.
AI Playlist turns a natural-language idea into a music playlist. Spotify describes it as a way to start with an intention—such as music for a road trip or a particular mood—instead of searching for individual tracks. The original announcement is documented by Spotify’s newsroom.
Who can use AI Playlist?
- Subscription: Spotify Premium is required to generate a playlist.
- Device: Spotify’s support documentation labels it “Premium on mobile,” covering the Android and iOS apps.
- Language: The feature is currently available in English.
- Location and account: Your market and account must be included in Spotify’s rollout, and beta features may not appear for every eligible account at the same time.
Spotify has not documented AI Playlist as a desktop-app or web-player creation feature. A Free listener may be able to play a playlist someone shares, but generation itself is a Premium function. Subscription prices differ by country, plan and date; check Spotify’s Premium page for local terms rather than relying on a universal price.

Where is it available now?
The four-country announcement is an important launch milestone, not the complete current market list. On April 24, 2025, Spotify announced AI Playlist’s beta expansion to more than 40 additional markets. The company’s published market list still describes the feature as an English-language Premium offering, so availability depends on the specific country, account and rollout status.
In practical terms, readers in the United States, Canada, Ireland and New Zealand are in markets named in both the original expansion and later availability information. That does not mean every account will see the same menu immediately, or that the feature is available worldwide.

How to create an AI Playlist on your phone
- Open the latest available Spotify app on an Android or iOS phone.
- Open Your Library.
- Tap the + button in the upper-right corner.
- Select AI Playlist.
- Choose a suggested prompt or type a custom request in English.
- Review the proposed tracks. Remove songs that do not fit and add any available recommendations you want to keep.
- Tap Create to save the playlist.
- Use Refine playlist to give Spotify another instruction when the first version needs work.
Spotify’s original instructions also mention searching for “AI Playlist” from the Search tab. Labels can move as the app changes, so use that search route if the Library creation menu looks different. Spotify’s current support instructions are at the AI Playlist help page.
Prompts that usually give you a better starting point
A prompt does not need special syntax. The most useful requests combine several signals, such as genre, mood, artist, decade, place, activity or occasion. Spotify also says that unusual references—including fictional characters, colors and emojis—can work when they communicate a musical idea.
Mood and activity
- “Upbeat indie pop for getting ready with friends.”
- “Relaxing instrumental electronic music for focused work.”
- “Energetic house music for a 30-minute run.”
Era, genre and setting
- “Late-1990s hip-hop for a long evening drive.”
- “2000s reggaeton for a sunny beach day.”
- “Romantic acoustic songs for cooking dinner at home.”
Discovery-oriented requests
- “Upbeat 2000s indie rock for a sunny two-hour drive, mostly underplayed songs, with a few familiar choruses.”
- “Alternative rock deep cuts from artists I may not know, with a similar energy to early-2000s guitar bands.”
These are requests for recommendations, not guaranteed database filters. A prompt can capture the mood while missing a precise factual condition, such as an exact release year or every song under a particular duration.

How to fix a weak or repetitive result
Make a vague playlist more specific
Add at least three dimensions: for example, a mood, an era, a genre and a listening situation. Context such as “for a two-hour drive” gives Spotify a clearer target than “good driving songs.”
Ask for more discovery
Try “underplayed tracks,” “deep cuts,” “artists I have not heard,” or “songs saved but rarely played.” Spotify may still lean toward familiar taste, so inspect the preview and remove obvious repeats.
State a critical constraint first
Put the most important rule near the beginning: “Make this instrumental only. Use ambient electronic music for deep work, with no vocals and no tracks longer than 10 minutes.” Natural-language constraints can be interpreted imperfectly, so check the generated list rather than assuming the rule was enforced.

Iterate instead of starting over
Use short follow-ups such as “Make it more upbeat,” “Add more female vocalists,” “Keep the same mood but add more alternative rock,” or “Replace the slowest songs with energetic tracks.” Remove unwanted songs and refine again. The beta still controls the underlying selection, so refinement is not equivalent to manually specifying every track.
Handle explicit or unsuitable tracks separately
Remove individual songs and refine the playlist. Account-level explicit-content settings remain the appropriate control for broader content restrictions; AI Playlist should not be treated as a replacement for those settings.

Spotify says the beta is designed for music-related prompts. It is not a general-purpose chatbot, a current-events search engine or a reliable way to retrieve every song matching a factual condition. Requests about news, specific brands or unrelated non-music tasks may produce no useful playlist. Safeguards also apply to offensive prompts.

AI Playlist and Prompted Playlist are different features
Spotify later introduced Prompted Playlist, a related beta with more detailed controls. It entered early access in New Zealand in December 2025, expanded to the United States and Canada in January 2026, and was announced for Australia, Ireland, Sweden and the United Kingdom in February 2026. Spotify says Prompted Playlist can use listening history and real-time music information such as trends, charts, culture and music history.

Do not use the names interchangeably. The September 2024 news event concerned AI Playlist; Prompted Playlist is a newer, more controllable product. Spotify’s support pages for the two features are AI Playlist and Prompted Playlist. Spotify’s podcast update is described in its April 2026 newsroom post.
Why AI Playlist may not appear
- Confirm that the account is Premium, not Free.
- Use the Android or iOS app rather than Spotify’s desktop or web player.
- Install the latest app version available for your phone.
- Check Your Library → +, then search the app for “AI Playlist.”
- Confirm that the account country is a supported market and that you are using English.
- Log out, restart the app and sign in again.
- Look for a newer Spotify creation interface that may have moved or renamed the entry point.
These checks cannot force a beta entitlement. Changing a phone’s language or using a VPN is not a documented way to make Spotify officially enable the feature.
Bottom line for listeners
AI Playlist is most useful as a fast first draft: describe the feeling or situation, inspect Spotify’s suggestions and refine them until the mix is usable. Premium, mobile access and English remain the practical requirements, and the September 2024 four-market rollout should be understood as a historical expansion milestone rather than a complete worldwide availability statement. If your app offers Prompted Playlist instead, treat it as Spotify’s newer related beta with finer controls and scheduled updates.
